Our client, Smile Life Insurance Company Limited, a wholly Malawian-owned company and a
key player in the Life Insurance Industry, seeks to engage through a competitive and transparent
executive search and recruitment service, a dynamic, innovative, and results-oriented Malawian
business executive to fill the senior position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The position is
tenable in Blantyre.

The successful candidate will be appointed on a 3-year fixed-term contract; renewable based on
performance. The incumbent will be initially appointed on probationary terms for a period of 6
months and will be confirmed in appointment by the Board as substantive CEO upon successful
completion of the probationary period, subject to regulatory approval.

Overall Purpose and Reporting Lines

Reporting to and working closely with the Board, the Chief Executive Officer will provide overall
strategic leadership and managerial direction for Smile Life to improve company performance and
successfully achieve the Strategic Objectives of the organization to maximize shareholder value in
line with company policies, set and approved by the Board of Directors and Shareholders.

Role and Summary of Key Responsibilities

This is a challenging and exciting top executive position requiring the services of a mature and suitably qualified, multi-skilled, business-driven, people-oriented, and customer-focused individual. The core responsibility of the CEO will be to grow the business of Smile Life in Malawi by providing sound leadership and direction for the organization through innovation and development of innovative insurance products. The CEO will also be responsible for strategy formulation, development, and execution. The incumbent will be expected to drive and ensure the effective implementation of high-quality strategies, to generate and deliver sustainable revenue growth and ultimately enhance business competitiveness, commercial viability, profitability, and shareholder value. He /she will also be responsible for reporting on results to the Smile Life Board of Directors.

Key Competencies/Attributes

This position requires a highly motivated person who is a strategic and tactical thinker and has an
entrepreneurial spirit (business acumen) with a bias for action and implementation. In addition to
the ability to lead, motivate, incentivize and manage stakeholders, staff and the community, the
CEO must be highly skilled in analyzing and solving policy issues and complex problems to achieve
the correct strategic outcomes. Excellent verbal oral and written communication skills are a must,
as well as the ability to present complex situations clearly and succinctly. Finally, the CEO must
possess the ability to negotiate, interact and achieve goals and targets Nationally, Regionally and
Internationally, if required.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) or any Social Sciences from a recognized
    university, or equivalent PLUS a First University Degree in Business Administration,
    Accountancy, Economics, or equivalent.
  • Advanced Diploma in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) or Insurance
    Institute of South Africa (IISA).
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience in the Insurance Industry at a Senior Management level.
  • Membership with the Insurance Institute of Malawi and Associate Membership of the
    Chartered Insurance Institute of the UK or Associate Membership of the IISA are essential.
  • Those with Actuarial qualifications, exposure, and/or experience will have an added advantage.
