Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Business Development Specialist tenable at its Head Office in Lilongwe reporting to the Business Development Grants Management and Communications Manager.

Duration: 4 Months effective April,2024.

Role Overview:

The role holder leads development and implementation of fundraising strategy for income growth and achievement of the Country Strategy Paper V objectives. S(he) leads in conducting market research, donor intelligence/scoping, identification of new opportunities, develop business models, take resource mobilization initiatives with a diverse range of funding agencies i.e., ActionAid International affiliates, Institutional and High Value donors.  The role holder is responsible for ensuring compliance and effective grant management.

The role support building of a strong and credible ActionAid Malawi profile/image/reputation through effective, creative, and innovative communications strategies for ActionAid Malawi visibility and fundraising.

Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Lead the formulation of business development models and opportunities.
  • Lead and coordinate resource mobilization efforts.
  • Lead in donor intelligence/scoping, market research and identification of new donors or potential funding opportunities.
  • Ensure participation of clusters and national office team in development of concept notes and funding proposal
  • Work with stakeholders to influence donor commitment and development agenda for Malawi.
  • Work in partnership with stakeholders and likeminded organizations to form consortium(s)for competitive calls and tender bids/proposals.
  • Ensure revenue targets as per Country Strategy Paper V are met.

Contract Management

  • Ensure compliance to donor rules and ActionAid Malawi policies and procedures in contract and grant management including timely submission of quality reports.
  • Lead in facilitation of inception workshops for all donor funded projects.
  • Lead in implementation of Contract Management System.
  • Support adherence to ActionAid Malawi cost recovery guidelines.
  • Support implementation of audit findings and other reviews

Media Engagements

  • Lead the development and track implementation of Communication Strategy.
  • Ensure update of media database to facilitate robust and responsive media engagements.
  • Ensure monitoring of ActionAid Malawi media coverage and identification of opportunities for positive media coverage
  • Lead and cultivate strong media relationship and understanding for ActionAid Malawi coverage.
  • Ensure organisation of media events such as press conference, media tours and media training.
  • Ensure news and feature stories on ActionAid Malawi are written and submitted for free publication in mainstream media institutions.
  • Ensure development and publication of all ActionAid Malawi communications materials e.g., monthly newsletters, media statements, annual reports, fliers, posters, banners, brochures, booklets, and video documentaries.
  • Ensure development and regular update of ActionAid Malawi website, including ensuring sourcing of suitable content for the website – blogs, case studies, news updates.
  • Ensure regular update of ActionAid Malawi social media accounts – Twitter and Facebook – with fresh and engaging content.
  • Lead in development of IEC materials.
  • Lead in engaging media for ActionAid Malawi campaigns, advocacy, and social movement work.

Staff and partners capacity development and organizational management

  • Lead in provision of capacity building to staff and partner on Business development, grant management and Communication.
  • Develop, monitor, and review annual plan and budgets for the unit.
  • Contribute to formulation and compliance with ActionAid Malawi internal control and account systems.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings.
  • Develop and monitor annual performance targets for the units and related staff.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A master’s degree in business administration, Marketing, or their equivalent.
  • At least five years in leadership role and of which 3 years should be in fundraising for Not-for-Profit Organisation(s).
  • Good understanding in Fundraising, sponsorship, communication, and grant management
  • In depth knowledge of current debates and thinking on development themes, media, and communication.
  • Good relationship building and networking skills.
  • Have practical experience in social marketing, business development, and contract and grant management.
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, documentation and presentation skills.
  • Excellent management, leadership, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills coupled with ability to influence, negotiate, advise, mentor, and train.
  • High degree of integrity, dependability, and confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivate.
