ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This job is tenable at Malawi Country Office. Successful candidate shall be reporting to the Head of Supply Chain. The job holder shall make definite contributions within the established policies and procedures, shall apply considerable knowledge derived from educational training and practical experience and shall exercise independent analysis for further reviews and decisions. At this grade level, staff receive supervision, but must work under broader instructions developing analytical tools and achieve outputs for effective food systems and supply chain execution. The incumbent shall also act as team leader in Food Systems operations working closely and in coordination with relevant stakeholders.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide analytics and contributions to food systems and supply chain activities, contribute to planning and coordination of field food systems and supply chain operations, to ensure actions are in line with an effective and integrated supply chain approach meeting the changing lives needs of the country and service provision requirements for partners.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  1. Contribute to the development and implementation of food systems plans and procedures, in line with the global WFP food systems strategy and regional/functional strategies, policies and plans, to achieve efficiency, agility, reliability, quality and to support national capacity strengthening in government food agencies.
  2. Contribute to strengthening of integration and main streaming of gender, youth, nutrition, and climate action in activities being proposed and implemented.
  3. Provide substantive contributions to value chains development, retail and markets development, and retail networks, in support of national food systems challenges and operational optimization.
  4. Assist in promoting documentation and dissemination of success stories, particularly those involving women and youth, to drive transformative changes in food systems.
  5. Contribute to planning and implementation of food safety and quality and postharvest loss management initiatives, and services to ensure a timely, cost-effective, and integrated approach and in close cooperation with key food systems stakeholders.
  6. Perform analyses and detailed conceptual work putting together comprehensive reports identifying opportunities for improvement and effective operationalization of food systems unit activities within his/her area of responsibility.
  7. Conduct regular financial analysis and budget reviews, drawing out insights and recommending actions to senior staff for maximizing use of resources and effectiveness of food systems operations budgets.
  8. Build and maintain productive partnerships mostly at operational level and collaborate with counterparts in the key food systems functions contributing to an integrated supply chain approach to government food agencies and cross-functional operational alignments.
  9. Build and maintain productive partnerships with key food systems and supply chain counterparts amongst government and other national organizations, UN agencies, NGOs and private sector to share operational knowledge contributing to coordinated and cost-effective food systems operations
  10. Provide technical contribution to value chains, market analysis and supply chain networks mapping to inform the selection of appropriate operations modalities to improve supply chain performance.
  11. Support the monitoring of supply chain activities to check that appropriate internal controls are followed to increase the day-to-day efficiencies and overall performance of supply chain operations.
  12. Prepare accurate, comprehensive, and timely reports, dashboards and other visual materials on food systems activities including trends to support informed decision-making and consistency of information presented to the stakeholders.
  13. Guide and supervise staff, acting as a point of referral, providing training, and supporting them with more complex analysis and queries.
  14. Other as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Advanced University degree preferably in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Social Science, Environmental Science, Supply Chain Management,  Business Administration, Logistics, or other related field, or First University degree with three additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.

Language: Fluency (level C) in English language and any local language

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • Experience coordinating food systems activities with other stakeholders.
  • Experience conducting analytical and conceptual work in support of strategy design and implementation.
  • Experience in coordinating periodic planning across functions and with partners.
  • Experience in analyzing and supporting the implementation of end-to-end supply chain operations and implementing improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in supervising staff.
  • Relevant work experience in a humanitarian and development organizations dealing with livelihoods, resilience building, market system development, nutrition, food security analysis, market development and linkages.
  • Experience in working with smallholder farmers on climate-smart agriculture, with particular focus on selected value chains and value chain actors (including financial institutions, aggregators, government institutions, processors, and many others).
  • Experience working in the UN or any international organization and on development projects/programs will be added advantage.
