STAFF VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT:
TECHNICIANS
The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to be considered for the following vacant positions in various academic departments at its Natural Resources College and Bunda College campuses. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting teaching, research, and outreach activities related to the fields.
1. Technician in Animal Health and Welfare
Qualifications
Diploma in Veterinary Science plus a Bachelor’s degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Animal Science, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, or related field from a recognized University
2. Technician in Beef and Dairy Production
Qualifications
A Bachelors’ degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Animal Science, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, or related field form a recognized University.
3. Technician in Farm Power and Machinery
Qualifications
A Bachelors’ Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from a recognized University.
4. Technician in Food Process Engineering
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Food Processing Engineering, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field from a recognized University.
5. Technician in Environmental Engineering
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Technology, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field from a recognized University.
6. Technician in Energy and Power Systems
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Renewable Energy, Energy Systems, Agricultural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized University.
7. Technician in Soil Sciences
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Soil Sciences, Agronomy, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
8. Technician in Plant Pathology
Qualifications
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Plant Pathology, Crop Science, or a related field from a recognized University.
9. Technician in Agronomy
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
10. Technician in Entomology
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Entomology, Biological Sciences, Crop Science, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
11. Technician in Plant Breeding
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Crop Science, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
Technician in Horticulture
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Horticulture, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
12. Technician in Biotechnology
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Biotechnology or a related field from a recognized University.
13. Technician in Forestry Management
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Forestry, Agroforestry, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
14. Technician in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Aquaculture and Fisheries Sciences, Fish Biology, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
15. Technician in Aquatic Health
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Aquatic Health, Aquaculture and Fisheries Science, Fish Biology or a related field from a recognized University.
16. Technician in Environmental Sciences
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Environmental Sciences and Management, Land and Water Management, Environment and Ecotourism, Agriculture or a related field from a recognized University.
17.Technician/Tutor in Mathematics
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Mathematical Sciences, or a related field from a recognized University.
18. Technician in Physics
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Physics, Physics Education, or a related field from a recognized University.
20. Technician in Biostatistics
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with at least a credit or equivalent in Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or a related field from a recognized University.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a technical support role in a recognized University or research institution.
- Candidates with a Masters’ degree in the required fields will have an added advantage.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment relevant to the field.
- Experience in handling research data, laboratory tests, and statistical tools.
- Experience in conducting experiments, managing records, and maintaining quality standards.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to work with students and faculty.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Experience in laboratory and safety procedures.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Academic and Research Support
- Assisting in the preparation and delivery of practical sessions for students in related fields
- Supporting academic staff in the design and execution of research projects in related fields.
- Assisting in data collection, analysis, and report writing for research and consultancy activities.
- Providing guidance on the proper use of tools and equipment.
- Assisting in workshops, practical sessions, and research projects.
- Maintaining stock of lab or workshop materials, chemicals, and equipment.
- Requesting procurement of supplies when necessary.
- Keeping accurate records of resource usage and disposal.
2. Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
- Operating specialized equipment related to the field (e.g., farm machinery, laboratory instruments, aquaculture tanks).
- Performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting technical issues.
- Ensuring all equipment complies with safety and operational standards.
3. Quality Control and Compliance:
- Collecting and analyzing samples for research or quality assurance purposes.
- Ensuring work processes comply with industry and institutional standards.
- Conducting safety checks and enforcing health and safety regulations.
- Managing data collection and ensuring accuracy in reporting.
4. Other Responsibilities
- Collaborating with stakeholders in the livestock industry to enhance practical learning and industry exposure for students.
- Performing any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENGAGEMENT
All the successful candidates will be engaged on an initial 2-year contract before they can be considered for permanent appointment based on satisfactory performance.
Remuneration will be in line with LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service (2023) applicable to staff on fixed-term contract.
