Position: Study Clinician

Lighthouse Trust is a registered Public Trust established to manage Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and provide leverage for leadership and delivery of integrated HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services in Malawi. Lighthouse has been involved in the development of locally applicable HIV care and treatment models. It is strategically positioned in Malawi’s national HIV response due to its close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH). The Lighthouse in close coordination with MoH provides integrated services at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Bwaila Hospital and some health facilities in urban and rural areas in Lilongwe, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Zomba Central Hospital and District Support Program (SP) for Northern region districts. Its strategic approach focuses on client-centred care based on four goals which are:

Goal 1: Service delivery: to enhance high-quality, integrated HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for adults and children

Goal 2: Model interventions and operations research: to develop, pilot, evaluate, and disseminate innovative programs and policies across the continuum of prevention, treatment, care and support for HIV infection and its co-morbidities, both infectious and non-infectious.

Goal 3: Quality management: to ensure that all patients at Lighthouse clinics and all supported sites are receiving quality health care and services as recommended by the MoH and other health development partners by utilizing quality improvement (QI) methodologies in a multidisciplinary team approach.

Goal 4: Capacity strengthening: to build and strengthen healthcare capacity for high quality HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.

Lighthouse Trust with funding from the International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (leDE) through the University of Bern Institute of Social and Preventive medicine, wishes to recruit a highly qualified and experienced person to fill the post of:

Position: Study Clinician

Reports to: Studies Coordinator

Team: Research Team

Location: Martin Press Center (Bwaila), Lilongwe

Duration: 12 months (with possibility of additional 6 months extension)

Job Purpose

The incumbent will join the Research team to implement the Tuberculosis Patient level study at Martin Press Bwaila clinic and will oversee and support study recruitment at Lighthouse KCH and Kawale clinics. The clinician will be responsible for recruitment and follow up of participants and will play a critical role in performing study eligibility assessments, clinical evaluations including laboratory investigations, and treatment. In performing these duties, the study clinician will work with the Studies Coordinator, Research manager, Monitoring Evaluation and Research director, and entire research team, to provide clinical management of participants enrolled in the study.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Review and comprehend the study protocol and ensure that study related activities are performed in accordance with the protocol and Standard Operating procedures.
  • Obtain informed consent from potential participants prior to any study procedures and ensure complete and accurate documentation of the consenting process.
  • Conduct study eligibility assessments and documentation
  • Enrol participants in the study, conduct all study related clinical evaluations and complete study related case report forms.
  • Screen all laboratory results when received and transcribe results in the lab specific case report forms
  • Coordinate referral for Chest X rays and acquisition of digital firms for further reading.
  • Conduct study follow up visits
  • Enter data in Red Cap
  • Administer study specific questionnaires, particularly the PHQ9, SF12, ASSIST and St George Respiratory Questionnaire.
  • Plan and coordinate clinic activities with the studies coordinator to ensure efficient flow during study visits.
  • Ensure timely reporting of adverse events, including any bleach in protocol.
  • Attend weekly study specific team meetings, departmental, all-staff meetings
  • Prepare weekly reports and updates to the study team.
  • Ensure all financial expenditures related to study participants are properly tracked.

Required Qualifications, Experiences and Other Attributes

  • Diploma in clinical medicine from a recognized institution
  • ART certification
  • Good clinical practice certification
  • Experience with HIV/AIDS programming
  • Experience developing and maintaining organized study record systems
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office i.e Power point, word, excel, etc.
  • Excellent oral presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in a detail-oriented environment
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
