SOS Children's Village

SOS Children’s Villages Malawi is a non-governmental child development organization which started its operations in Malawi in 1994. We envision every child belonging to a family and growing with love, respect and security. We achieve this through building families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities.

We support children who have lost parental care and those at risk of losing parental care to develop within a caring family environment to their full potential as contributing members of their respective societies.

We are currently operating SOS Children’s Villages Programmes in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Ngabu.

In this context, we are looking for suitable candidates to fill vacant positions at National Office in Lilongwe, Vocational Training Centre, and Ngabu Programme in Chikwawa District.

Social Worker (Ngabu Programme)
The Village Social Worker is responsible for ensuring that the procedures for the admission (and departure) of children into (and from) the SOS Children’s Villages are properly followed. The Village Social Worker provides advice, guidance and support to SOS Mothers and works
closely with them to plan appropriate programmes for the development of each child. S/he reports to the Family Based Care Coordinator.

It is in this context that we invite applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Village Social Worker at our Ngabu Village in Chikwawa.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ensures that SOS Child Admission and Departure procedures and policies are followed
    • Ensures that the basic needs of each child are addressed
    • Develops an appropriate plan of action, with the child’s SOS Mother and Village Director, to meet the needs of the child and to guide the child to become a well-balanced individual. As far as possible, address the child’s needs within the SOS Family structure.
    • Provides children with individual counseling whenever necessary.
    • Liaises with the SOS Mothers concerning their SOS children. Provide advice, guidance and support with regard to problems experienced by the Mothers.
    • Promotes in-service training of the SOS Mothers. Participate in and assist with the development of training programmes wherever appropriate.
    • Provides advice, guidance and support to the other members of the Village team, in matters relating to the Mothers and children.
    • Liaises with the relevant Social Welfare Department in the referral and admission of children into the SOS Children’s Village.

Qualifications And Experience
The suitable candidate should possess the following qualifications and skills:-

    • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field
    • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in social work
    • Counseling Skills
    • Facilitation and presentation skills
    • Ability to relate to and communicate with young people and children;
