The Hunger Project Malawi

The Hunger Project Malawi a branch of the Global Hunger Project currently working in Blantyre, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Dedza, Mwanza, Neno, Ntcheu, Salima and Zomba districts has received funding from KfW through UNICEF on behalf of the Government of Malawi to facilitate implementation
of interventions under the Multi-sectoral Nutrition Program including Early Childhood Development Phase II in Phalombe and Nsanje Districts. The project will be implemented for a period of 8 months in collaboration with relevant Government sectors.

The Hunger Project Malawi would like to recruit key staff with relevant skills and experienced to work on the project and ensure its successful implementation. The key positions to be recruited are as follows:

SENIOR PROJECT ACCOUNTANT (One Position)

Job purpose:

The position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the project finances, preparing consolidated project financial reports, leading in all budget processes and giving guidance and advice to project staff on fund utilization, supervising the District project Accountants, and budget
monitoring. In addition, the candidate must be able to work independently, have leadership skills and ability to consider implications of professional value, ethics, and attitude for decision making. The right candidate must be detail oriented, demonstrate good communication skills, committed to
success and have vast knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the project financial systems and ensure that there are strong internal controls in place.
  • Prepare consolidated project financial statements for the project
  • Ensure financial reports are produced and submitted to the donor in a timely manner.
  • Review monthly project financial statements prepared by District Accountants
  • Review and approve monthly general ledger journal entries and bank reconciliations.
  • Ability to conduct staff training in financial management.
  • Support annual budget processes.
  • Coordinate and lead in external audit processes.
  • Identify changes related to regulatory reporting and statutory accounting standards.
  • Ensure that relevant taxes have been duly deducted from all payments in line with tax regulations.
  • Prepare and maintain the payroll for the project.
  • The job holder directly supervises District Accountants.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Candidates for consideration must be Chartered Accountant under ACCA or with Bachelor’s degree and MUST be a member of ICAM
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a Non-Governmental Organization.
  • Vast knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven attention to detail, follow-through skills, and problem solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize heavy workloads in order to meet sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to interact well with others.
