Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation – Malawi (BCMCF-M) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the Malawi Government in the health sector. Our Mission is to provide high-quality, high-impact, highly ethical pediatric and family-centered health care, health professional training and clinical research, focused on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, malnutrition and other conditions impacting the health and well-being of children and families worldwide.

BCMCF-M is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of:

Position: Senior Nurse
Contract Duration:  1 year (possibly renewable)
Position Type:  Full-time
Location:  Lilongwe
Reports to: Medical Director

Position Description and Responsibilities

 The Senior Nurse will be responsible for giving excellent standards of care to clients and supervising nursing and ancillary clinic staff.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Management of clinical services including, but are not limited to…
    • Fostering a culture of professionalism
    • Registration at the front desk
    • Provision of Health Talks as well as coordinating others to ensure Health Talks are being given.
    • Triage, including vital signs, nutritional assessment, pill counts and proper assessment of clients presenting with illnesses.
    • Review of client and prescribing of ARV and any other treatment as per need in examination room.
    • Phlebotomy- Collection of specimens prescribed by clinical staff
    • Performing basic laboratory tests
    • Dispensing of prescribed medications
    • Social and psychosocial support
    • Provision of Intensive Adherence Counseling
    • Provision of HTS services
    • Participation in quality improvement projects and clinic registers.
    • Provision of Cervical Cancer, Family Planning, Antenatal and postnatal services
  1. Manage leave days and off days and ensure proper staffing in clinic at all times.
  2. Supervise and provide mentorship to nursing staff and ancillary staff in clinic.
  3. Responsible for providing bi annual staff evaluations.
  4. Problem solving issues in clinic as they arise.
  5. Create a positive and encouraging environment which is holistic and client centered.
  6. This position is 25% administrative and 75% clinical.
  7. Provide a critical link between clinic management and clinical care, overseeing clients care operations, assigning and monitoring staff, identifying and implementing quality improvements
  8. Managing day-to-day supplies and equipment for the clinic
  9. Make management and budgetary decisions for his/her department, set work schedules, coordinate meetings and make decisions about personnel in the department
  10. Attends, participate in journal club and other continuing professional development opportunities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of a Degree in Nursing/Midwife obtained from a recognized institution
  • 5 years relevant experience.
  • Training in VCT/ART is an added advantage.
  • Must have strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Must be able to build a solid rapport with all staff members.
  • Lead a team focusing on continuing improvement using approved tools, design, control, validations and ensuring adherence to local regulations along with Baylor clinical policies and procedures
  • Is an engaged and lifelong learner
  • Experience in quality improvement projects (clinical setting)
