Lindian Resources Ltd, a leader in the exploration and development of strategic minerals for energy efficiency, has obtained the necessary licenses to launch a rare earths mineral mining project at Kangankunde, Balaka District, Malawi.

Recognized as one of the top hard rock rare earths deposits globally, the site is located about 30 km from the town of Balaka. Construction of a stage 1 development will commence in Q3 2024, with production expected to start in mid-2025. The mine boasts an estimated life of over 100 years with expansion plans following the commissioning of Stage 1. Initial efforts will concentrate on the development of the management and senior team to undertake operational readiness activities
and establishing robust systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.

SENIOR MINE GEOLOGIST

PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Senior Mine Geologist will oversee the development and implementation of mine geology policies and procedures and is responsible for leading the mine geology team to ensure the integration of geological models into mining operations to optimize resource extraction efficiently and sustainably. The incumbent will design infill drilling and grade control systems, develop block models for reserve and resource calculation, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote a safety culture that surpasses SHEC standards through active leadership and by sharing best practices widely within the project team and stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of mine geology policies and procedures.
  • Design and manage infill drilling programs and develop mine block models to integrate geological models into mining operations.
  • Develop and manage the mine geology budget, ensuring cost control and identifying opportunities for cost savings whilst monitoring expenditures to keep within approved
    budgets.
  • Prepare geological reports and presentations, ensuring compliance with company standards and statutory requirements.
  • Train and develop staff to enhance compliance and facilitate coordination and communication between departments to ensure integrated and efficient operations.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and participate actively in geological works to manage risk and enhance operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE

  • Honours degree in Geology or Geological Engineering or a related tertiary qualification is essential.
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience working in open cast mines, demonstrating a progressive career in mine geology.
  • Prior experience coordinating and supervising mine geology teams during construction and ramp-up phases, with a strong background in managing infill drilling programs, grade control, and developing geological models. Experience in Africa and Greenfields environments is advantageous.
  • Expertise in block modelling, resource estimation, and geologic mapping, with a thorough understanding of mine safety, environmental regulations, and sustainable practices. Proficiency in the latest geology software and technologies, e.g. 3D modelling and GIS tools.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, strategic work planning, and complex problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting geological data to diverse audiences and adaptability to technological and strategic changes in mining.
  • Demonstrated leadership in team development, strategic thinking, safety, and environmental awareness.
  • Registration with a professional geological body and professional accreditation in geology.
  • Valid Drivers Licence
