Background

Based on its operational requirements, Malawi Fertilizer company wishes to recruit suitably qualified persons to fill the following existing vacancy which is tenable at its Malawi Fertilizer Company in Liwonde.

 

SENIOR MAINTENANCE MANAGER

Position Purpose

To ensure optimal equipment and facility performance by developing and implementing maintenance strategies, managing preventive and breakdown maintenance programs, optimising resource utilisation, controlling costs, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and driving operational efficiency while minimising downtime and enhancing asset reliability

 

Main duties

  • Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance strategies that maximise equipment reliability and performance.
  • Define and execute preventive maintenance programs to minimise downtime and extend asset life.
  • Evaluate and optimise technical resource utilisation through effective planning and scheduling.
  • Manage and coordinate routine inspections and preventive maintenance activities to ensure equipment reliability and minimise operational disruptions.
  • Implement risk-based maintenance planning to prioritize critical equipment and prevent unexpected failures.
  • Liaise with production and quality teams to align maintenance activities with plant operational goals.
  • Drive the plant breakdown maintenance team to resolve equipment failures promptly and minimise production downtime.
  • Control maintenance costs through efficient resource allocation, contractor management, and process optimisation.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and records for compliance, traceability, and continuous improvement initiatives. • Manage spare parts inventory to ensure the availability of critical components and reduce downtime.
  • Develop and implement inventory control processes to optimise stock levels and cost efficiency.
  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors to source quality maintenance materials and services
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process improvements and cost savings within maintenance operations.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives through data analysis and performance benchmarking.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and methodologies to enhance maintenance effectiveness.
  • Implement and adhere to EHSS (Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainability) policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with relevant safety and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct regular audits, report compliance status, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Define and implement risk, governance, and compliance policies to identify and mitigate operational risks
  • Ensure that the individual performance management discussions are completed within the policy guidelines, recorded and followed through on personal development areas.
  • Maintain a positive work climate and culture to energise employees, give meaning to work, minimise work disruption and maximise employee productivity.
  • Train staff on maintenance procedures to ensure all team members are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge, crucial for maintaining equipment reliability and safety.

 

Desirable Qualifications, Work experience and Personal Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a busy industrial environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
