About Innovations for Poverty Action:

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is an international non-profit research organization dedicated to discovering and promoting effective solutions to global poverty problems. IPA works in partnership with development partners and academic researchers to create and evaluate approaches and potential solutions to poverty problems using randomized evaluations in the fields of health, education, microfinance, governance and agriculture. We also mobilize and support these decision makers to use these solutions to build better programs and policies at scale.

About the Project:

What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls, locally named “Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza” (PKN) is a randomized controlled trial aiming to assess the effectiveness of a community-mobilization intervention (SASA! Together) to prevent violence against women in Malawi. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of the PKN program, assessing the effectiveness of the SASA! Together program at shifting individual behavior and reducing violence in intimate relationships while also tackling community norms that drive these forms of violence against women. The cRCT will also assess the added value of combining SASA! Together with a women’s social and economic empowerment program, Moyo Olemekezeka (MO) for most at-risk households.

The program takes a whole community approach and uses gender transformative approaches at different levels of society to address the root causes of IPV. It will draw primarily on two existing, evidence-based prevention models, namely SASA! Together, and Moyo Olemekeza (MO). The program aims to change social norms across the community, impacting how community members think about violence against women and about how they use their power in their intimate relationships and in the broader community. The MO approach is a family-based, women’s economic and social empowerment approach. It has been adapted from Zindagii Shoista, another evidence-based approach implemented and evaluated in Tajikistan, which comprises a combination of gender norm, behavioral change and income-generating activities.
