Job Title: Senior Epidemiologist

Overview: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Epidemiologist to join our team. The Senior Epidemiologist will play a crucial role in implementing and managing health and mortality surveillance systems, responding to outbreaks, providing technical support to district and national governments, overseeing studies, and contributing to funding proposals, reports, and peer-reviewed publications. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in epidemiology, public health, and research, with demonstrated expertise in data analysis, project management, and communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and manage health and mortality surveillance systems, including designing data collection protocols, ensuring data quality, and analyzing trends.
  • Lead outbreak response efforts, including investigating cases, conducting epidemiological studies, and recommending control measures.
  • Provide technical support to district and national governments on epidemiological issues, including disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and public health interventions.
  • Oversee research studies, including study design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Contribute to the development of funding proposals, including writing project proposals, budgets, and work plans.
  • Prepare reports on surveillance findings, outbreak investigations, and research studies for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Publish peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals on epidemiological research findings and public health interventions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including epidemiologists, biostatisticians, public health professionals, and policymakers.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in epidemiology, public health, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in epidemiological research and surveillance, preferably in Africa
  • Strong analytical skills, including proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS, Stata).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex epidemiological concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in project management, including managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Track record of publishing peer-reviewed papers in epidemiology or public health journals.
  • Knowledge of international public health guidelines and standards, such as the International Health Regulations (IHR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

Preferred but not required:

  • Malawian citizenship or residency
  • Experience working in low-resource or settings, ideally in Malawi
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Experience with GIS mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Chichewa and/or Yao languages.
  • Experience in capacity building and training of public health professionals.
