Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Lim

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is incorporated under the Companies Act of the Laws of Malawi. Its core business is to procure, transmit and distribute electric power in Malawi as well as manage System Market Operations and Single Buyer in Malawi.

ESCOM is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions currently existing in the Optic Fiber Directorate of the Corporation.

Senior Engineer – Data Center (1 Position)
Grade: ES6
Location: Blantyre
Supervised by : Chief Engineer Operations

Purpose of the Job

To design, maintain, and optimize the power infrastructure for the data centers.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Reporting on data centre performance and suggesting improvements.
  2. Creating and maintaining disaster recovery plans to ensure data centre resilience.
  3. Managing data centre infrastructure, such as servers, storage, networking, and cooling systems.
  4. Planning for scalability and redundancy to meet future growth while maintaining high availability.
  5. Overseeing Monitoring and maintenance of power systems (e.g., UPS, generators), cooling systems (e.g., CRAC units), and network infrastructure.
  6. Performing preventive maintenance on a regular basis.
  7. Optimizing Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Cooling Efficiency to save energy and money.
  8. Implementing automation technologies (such as DCIM software) to enable real-time monitoring and administration.
  9. Ensuring that data centre infrastructure meets minimum security requirements.
  10. Protecting sensitive data, setting up access controls, firewalls, and encryption.
  11. Performing frequent security audits and vulnerability assessments.
  12. Testing and validating backup and failover mechanisms to reduce downtime during disruptions.
  13. Collaborating with IT teams, vendors, and business units to align data centre operations with organizational requirements.

Attributes and competencies

  • Deep knowledge of data centre technologies (e.g., servers, storage, power, networking, virtualization).
  • Proficiency in power and cooling systems (e.g., UPS, PDUs, CRAC units).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and hybrid cloud architectures.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to clients, colleagues, and management, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding and following safety protocols to prevent accidents while working with potentially hazardous equipment.
  • Efficiently managing workload and completing tasks within deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following: Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology
  • 4 Years relevant work experience
  • Certification in cybersecurity is desired.
  • Registered Engineer with MEI/ICTAM
