ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION 

Established in 2019, Wona Collective is a feminist women-led arts collective, media production company and communications consultancy based in Lilongwe, Malawi. Our vision as Wona is to have more documented stories of Malawians created by Malawians, particularly stories that are often erased or left untold: the stories of women and marginalised groups.

Since 2023, the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) contracted Wona Collective to be their communications partner for the Malawi Youth Landscape and Learning Platform (YLLP), an activity under the global USAID-funded Youth Excel program.

JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Communications Officer will be responsible for leading Wona’s communications portfolio under the YLLP. This will include liaising with internal and external stakeholders on the YLLP. Developing and curating content for a quarterly newsletter and managing the Youth Lead website. The officer will provide further strategic communications support to the YLLP, reporting to and under the guidance of the directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creating and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that will inform how the program will communicate with various stakeholders, this will require but is not limited to the following tasks:
  • Key message generation in multiple languages including but not limited to English, Chichewa, Tumbuka
  • Mapping out key partners and stakeholders who may serve as target audiences for key messages.
  • Creating a plan for accessible and inclusive communications
  • Creating plans for both internal and external communications that will allow for buy-in from: Ministerial partners (Ministries of Youth, Education, Gender and Health), Civil Society Organisations and Youth Leaders.
  • Curating a quarterly newsletter showcasing the impactful youth work in Malawi by conducting interviews, coordinating with partners, writing and editing articles, designing layouts and collaborating with external communications teams for disbursement coordination.
  • Oversee the crafting of communication materials for government and development partners to facilitate effective communication with youth and relevant stakeholders in partnership with graphic designers.
  • Managing the YouthLead Malawi Website, by regularly updating the YouthLead website with pertinent articles and resources catering to youth and youth-focused development initiatives.
  • Coordinating communications for learning events.

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Experience managing graphic communications and/or directly using graphic design tools (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience in communication for development
  • Experience in adapting content to deliver customized messaging
  • Results‐driven with proven success leading and managing communication campaigns and projects
  • Experience managing websites and email-distribution platforms, and/or working with website and other technology vendors and consultants, including WordPress.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of accuracy and manage sensitive information
  • Experience managing other related communications vendors, such as news-distribution services, media-monitoring services, printing services or brokers, photographers/videographers or suppliers.
  • Exceptional writing, editing skills. with a keen understanding of how to write to and connect with different audiences
  • Demonstrates strong verbal interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience creating/managing project budgets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various software packages such as Microsoft Office
  • Experience supporting positive youth development programming
  • Familiarity with data storytelling

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, or related fields, with at least five (5) years work experience in communications, advocacy, or public relations.
