Nation Publications Limited (NPL), a multi-award winning and leading media house is looking for passionate, dedicated and hardworking individuals to join its vibrant Editorial Tearm by filling the following position of Senior Business News Analyst.

The position is tenable at Lilongwe office

JOB BRIEF

This is a key position within the NPL Editorial set-up that will report on Public Finance and Economic Management (PFEM), including national and local council budgets; track the government’s long-term development agenda and business sector.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

i. News gathering

  • Cultivate and manage a broad source and contacts base with players across key economic sectors
  • Identiy and develop newsworthy ideas into synopses that should yield investigative, exclusive and analytical stories on business and economy.
  • Locate and verify information for news and feature stories.
  • Interviewa range of relevant sources to establish facts and/or informed opinions for building stories and interpreting/explaining complex issues.
  • Examine docurnents for additional evidence and contextual background.
  • Cover major business and economic events.
  • Take pictures, audios, video clips and develop info-graphics.
  • Participate in peer mentoring and other internal value adding processes.

ii. News writing and reporting

  • Produce news content that is free of errors in facts, style, spelling, punctuation and grammar while avoiding consequential omissions.
  • Write stories and features from a fair and unbiased perspective and sensitive to legal and ethical
  • Contribute to NPL’s social enterprise journalism projects.

iii. Digital First

  • Write distinctive news articles for Nation Online (http://www.mwnation.com) with special focus on business and finance.
  • Prepare and schedule social media posts for NPL’s digital channels, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and YouTube.
  • Post pictures, audios, video clips and develop info-graphics on digital platforms
  • Generate content that allows for personalisation and customisation.

iv. Macro-level Nows Analysis

  • Monitor and anslyse mplementation of Malawi’s major developnment blue-prints such as Malawi
  • and implementtion plans, the Public Sector Investment Prograrmme and various sectoral policies and strategies
  • Track and report on national and local authority budgets, including procurernent decisions and processes, revenue and experiditure trends
  • Cover legislative agenda in Parliament as it relates to business and the economy with a bearing on the real sector.
  • Analyse emerging issues on Public Finance and Economic Management.
  • Track on-budget and off-budget development assistance and its impact on national development
  • Analyse fiscal and monetary policy developments, capital and labour markets within the context of the macro level policy environment.
  • Write analytical stories on international trade, the corporate sector, including their governance operating environment (infrastructure, markets, public sector support etc)
  • Cover micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as the informal business sector
  • Write on households and consumers in the context of incorme, expenditure flows and the price mechanism.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

  • Strong grasp of Malawis development agenda, fiscal and monetary policies.
  • Good understanding of national, local development planning and budgeting frameworks
  • Good knowiedge of industry and market trends.
  • Well-vested in data journalism.
  • Strong passion for investigative journalism.
  • Demonstrable ability for digital storytelling and in-depth print news reporting.
  • Good interviewing and research skills
  • High levels ofintegrity
  • A team player
  • Good writing skills
  • Ability to record and edit audio and video content with specialised software.

WORK EXPERIENCE

At least five years of financial journalism or stints in accounting and in institutions with interest in public finance and economic governance.

QUALIFICATIONS

A degree in any of the following fields: Economics, Social Science, Finance, Public Administration, International Relations and Commerce. Those with relevant post-graduate qualifications have an added advantage.
