Job Description
Introduction
The Malawi – Liverpool – Wellcome – Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, affiliated to the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). MLW has 2 aims, to conduct excellent research that benefits health and train the next generation of researchers and leaders.
The position of Research Nurse will report to the Principal Investigator. The Research Nurse will carry out routine clinic activities. In addition, the Research Nurse will collaborate with government nurses. The Research Nurse will assist the Principal Investigator and provide support and co-ordination to other MINI-ND study team.
POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE): In summary, why does the job exist?
- To identify, screen and obtain informed consent for study participants which are mothers who have delivered infants in the neonatal and post-natal ward in Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
- To conduct study questionnaires, examinations and follow up study participants (mothers and infants) according to study protocols and to obtain clinical samples required for the study.
- To work collaboratively with government nurses and contribute to clinical care as permitted by study requirements.
- To provide support and co-ordination with other MINI-ND study team research nurses and field workers.
- To assist the principal investigator as required in data audit and quality control.
Responsibilities
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The major duties and tasks of this job.
- To maintain infection control procedures at all times according to ward and hospital protocols and to ensure other study staff adhere to these protocols.
- Always adhere to the highest standards of research ethics and of professional nursing practice including:

- Consider mothers and infant’s interests foremost before any other consideration, recognizing that the infant’s clinical needs always take priority over research
- Maintain confidentiality of patients’ records and respect patients and guardians’ privacy and rights
- To keep the patient / guardian / parent informed at all times and participants/parents/guardian’s privacy, dignity and rights.
- Maintain a high standard in undertaking clinical research activities

- Identify and screen eligible participants, seek informed consent, and maintain the study screening and enrolment logs.
- To perform study procedures to the highest standards including collection of accurate study data collection and procedures in a timely manner.
- To ensure accurate handover of study participants before the leave occurs.
- Ensure study and clinical documentation is completed accurately and kept up to date.
- Liaise with and support other study staff to ensure study requirements are fulfilled.
- To undertake study procedures such as venepuncture.
- Obtain clinical specimens as required by the study protocols.
- To complete all study questionnaires as per study protocol. Experience in conducting neurodevelopmental assessments is desirable (but not essential)
- Ensure all the requirements of the study are fulfilled according to the Standard Operating Procedures and the study protocol.
- Communicate any deviation from the study protocol to the principal investigators.
- Liaise with data management staff regularly and provide clarification when requested.
- Maintain professional education, including attending seminars and meetings both external and internal as available and as requested.
- Participate regularly in study team meetings to evaluate and plan study activities.
- To behave professionally at all times including
- Looking after and using the equipment and premises of Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and the study.
- Being punctual.
- Good communication with both patients and staff.
- To be observant and vigilant regarding the condition of the patient including significant changes in vital signs and recorded observations. Be ready to inform the Doctor and intervene where necessary according to protocols.
- To attend all relevant training and competency assessments required for data collection for this study.
- To be aware at all times of responsibilities pertaining to the post (as recorded in this document)
- To ensure study team follows up all patients according to study protocol maintaining a minimal loss to follow up of participants.
- To assist the principal investigator in ordering study supplies and ensuring adequate stock of all study supplies.
- Any further tasks deemed reasonable that the line manager or medical staff may see fit to request from time to time.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS: (i.e. Education, Training and Experience Requirements).
- Education: The minimum level of education required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, social/health sciences related eg Public Health, Community Development. A masters in the above areas would be an added advantage but not an essential.
- Experience: The minimum number of years of experience required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.
- State registered or Enrolled/NMT nurse with at least 2 years’ experience in Paediatrics or obstetrics. Clinical research experience will be an added advantage.
