The Health Economics and Policy Unit (HEPU) under the Department of Health Systems and Policy at KUHeS, in collaboration with Imperial College London and University College London, has received a grant from the Wellcome Trust, UK, to implement a research project entitled “Thanzi La Mawa: Integrated Analysis of Health System Capabilities and Effects on Population Health in Malawi and Eastern, Central and Southern Africa”. The project’s goal is to optimize the delivery of health care in Malawi and other resource-limited countries in East, Central and Southern African countries. The project seeks to engage a Programmer who will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of research experts to develop a healthcare system model that optimizes the utilization of available resources in the health sector.

Research Fellow (Programming)

Job summary

The post holder will contribute to developing a new model for all diseases in Malawi that encompasses the most important diseases and conditions in Malawi and the resources that are available in the health-system. The post-holder will be part of a team of researchers based in York and London and would be expected to be able to work independently with supervision and to participate in VTC/Phone calls with that team and occasionally travel to York, London for short periods, as necessary. The model is being written in Python and will be run on the Azure cloud computing platform.

Purpose

The main purpose of this position is to participate in research activities, development of disease model, teaching, mentorship and supervision within the HEPU and the School of Global and Public Health under KUHeS.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a comprehensive health and allied sciences higher learning institution established with the primary function of training health workers under one roof in order to promote inter-profession collaboration, team building and team work from early days of training.

The Research Fellow (Programming) will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development of the disease and health system model within the TLO model framework
  • Use the model to address key research questions
  • Lead on or contribute to the leadership of the production of research outputs and research
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by th

Desirable Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to synthesize disparate information in a clear and concise manner
  • Experience in developing mathematical computer models of diseases or other biological phenomena

Other skills and abilities

  • Ability to organize work plans based on higher level goals
  • Strong organizational skills in order to balance competing priorities and direct one’s own work taking on board feedback of the team
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to apply research ethics procedures
  • Excellent computer skills including word processing, presentation development and modern communication software (zoom, slack etc.)

Method Of Application

  • Master’s Degree in computer Science, Computing, Mathematics, Information Systems or related
  • Those with a PhD in the relevant field or have peer-reviewed publications will have anadded advantage
  • Minimum 2 years progressive experience in similar position
  • Strong Python skills; including Pandas and Numpy libraries for data handling and numerical computing;
  • High level of familiarity with Git, GitHub processes and other modern development tools;
  • Code profiling and optimization;
  • Cloud-computing (Azure or AWS Batch) experience
