Project Background

Agri-impact Malawi secured funding for a one-year project, Household Nutrition and Economic Empowerment Through Vegetable Production, Value Addition and Marketing (NEVAM). This project aims to Harness Household nutrition and economic empowerment through vegetable production, value addition and market linkages in Malawi through increasing productivity and nutritional value of vegetable crop production systems and Objective and improving profitability and consumer orientation of vegetable crops among smallholder farmers at traditional authority Chiseka and chadza in Lilongwe district.

Summary of Duties and responsibilities:

The Project Officer-Agricultural Market support will support the effective planning and implementation, monitoring and reporting of Household Nutrition and Economic Empowerment Through Vegetable Production, Value Addition and Marketing activities in Lilongwe, T/A CHiseka and Chadza in Lilongwe. S/he will provide technical backstopping and support to producer/support groups to promote and expand capacity in the household-level nutritionally dense vegetable production and utilization. Based at our Lilongwe office, this position will require a continuous presence in the targeted communities.

The specific duties include:

Facilitate the identification of 10 community-based support group volunteers to support the implementation of the activities and enhance the delivery of interventions.

Mobilize producer/support groups, led by the identified community volunteers to establish vegetable homestead gardens through resource mobilization (seed, locally sourcing homestead garden establishment materials etc.)

Prepare and conduct household food and nutrition security profiling and capacity assessment to identify needs, including training and support.

Promote low-cost seed-saving innovations for nutritionally dense Vegetables in homestead gardens to improve household access to nutritious foods.

Conducting a review of Existing Nutrition modules and messages and synthesizing them to support nutrition education and the preparation of nutritious dishes for children under five at the household level.

Conduct Community-level nutrition education and preparation of nutritious dish demonstrations.

Implement timely participatory and pragmatic training in farming as a business, post-harvest handling, VSLA and value addition in accordance with the training curriculum agreed upon.

Support producer groups to establish strong formal legal, governance and operational committees to improve their performance and institutional capacity.

Support and facilitate producer groups to develop and implement comprehensive business and store plans to reduce post-harvest losses produced at homestead gardens.

Contribute to the planning and carrying out of exchange visits, conferences, and farmer exhibitions.

Conduct regular crop performance monitoring and provide technical production advice to producer groups.

Participate in regular monitoring, collection, and data entry into internal and external data analysis and reporting on trends and changes.

Contribute to the development of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly work plans and reports

Any other duties assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in agriculture, agribusiness, community development or development studies from a reputable institution. Other qualifications will be considered if complemented by extensive practical experience.

At least two years of experience in agribusiness/agricultural production and agricultural produce marketing.

Detailed knowledge of the specific context, issues and challenges related to agricultural production, household-level nutrition, and post-harvest loss management.

Excellent social skills with abilities to mobilize rural communities and sensitization/training in agriculture and marketing.

Strong technical knowledge in agricultural production with an emphasis on household-level vegetable crop production with the integration of livestock and poultry production.

Proven knowledge of and experience in supporting and training small-scale farmers in enhancing produce quality, post-harvest handling and seed saving is desirable.

Good writing and reporting skills with attention to detail and data accuracy.

Experience in working with data and databases is highly valued.

Competence in Microsoft office (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint).

Fluent command of English and Chichewa.

Good motorcycle riding skills, valid driving licenses, and willingness to ride motorcycles are essential.

The ability to drive a manual vehicle and possess a driver’s license will be an added advantage.
