Rays of Hope Ministries is a non-profit, Christian organization that collaborates with the Malawi Government to produce morally responsible and youthful leaders through educational, spiritual, nutritional, and entrepreneurial programs in Blantyre, Zomba, Mchinji, Ntchisi, Thyolo, and Lilongwe. The organization is going through a steep growth trajectory taking it to various districts in Malawi. The latest addition to our growth is a newly designed program called, the Holistic Opportunity for Pupil Excellence (HOPE). HOPE is designed to increase the primary school completion rate with excellent grades, positioning students for better selection rates into national and district secondary schools. To that end, we seek to recruit for the following positions.
Role Purpose
The Program Officer will be reporting to the Programs Coordinator for a program designed to accelerate learning and excellent completion rate in primary school in Dowa/Kasungu. The role will be responsible for the day-to-day micro leadership and management of program to have smooth project implementation in line with Rays of Hope policies and donor requirements in the designated program impact area. Further, the Program Officer will be responsible for documenting all lessons learned during the implementation of the initiative.
Key Areas of Accountability
i. Run a cohesive tutor-led initiative with other intervention pieces such as job training and summer camp.
ii. In collaboration with the school leadership, lead in the recruitment of primary school learners who are program participants
iii. To plan and organize a curriculum that will accelerate learning and completion rate with excellence in consistent with the goals and objectives of the organization through remediation/tutoring
iv. To be a liaison of the organization with the local schools and the subsequent key stakeholders including the community
v. To implement all the initiative-designed activities of improving learners’ performance in their academic journeys
vi. In collaboration with the project coordinator, organize and facilitate in-service training of teachers.
vii. Maintain excellent working relationships with teachers, head teachers, Primary Education Advisors, and other community-level stakeholders.
viii. In collaboration with Primary Education Advisors, conduct routine supervision visits to the project impact area.
ix. Lead in the recruitment, and training of tutors in the initiative ensuring that learners accelerate their learning.
x. Offer leadership to the tutors in the program in achieving the program objectives and goals.
Oversight
Program Officers will have a direct supervision role of tutors present in the program.
Qualifications
i. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in education with two years’ experience in tutoring/remediation with emphasis on numeracy and literacy; or a diploma in education with five years’ experience in tutoring/remediation with emphasis in planning and coordination.
ii. Two to three years of NGO experience in an operations role, preferably in a coordination capacity.
iii. A decent understanding of the education landscape in Rural Malawi.
Essential Attributes
i. Skills in community mobilization, especially involvement of parents in supporting learning for their children.
ii. Skillsets in educational capacity strengthening including facilitation.
iii. Ability and flexibility to work with a team.
iv. Good personal and organizational skills, including time management, and ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
v. Excellent communication (written and oral communication) and interpersonal skills.
