The Ministry is mandated to create an enabling environment for sustained provision of Land, Housing and Urban Development services to promote and encourage sustainable  development. In pursuit of this mandate, the Ministry is implementing a flagship project to construct 10,000 houses for Security Institutions across the country in order to provide decent accommodation for security Institutions (Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prison Service and Immigration and Citizenship Services.

The Ministry of Lands has developed an innovative strategy to fast – track the implementation of the project and wishes to engage suitably qualified and experienced professionals to fill the following vacant posts tenable at the Infrastructure Management Unit – Lilongwe.

Post : Principal Structural Engineer (Grade G)
Salary : Within the range of Grade G salary scale segment
Reporting to : Chief Structural Engineer (Grade F)
Location : Infrastructure Management Unit in the Ministry of Lands, LilongweThe Principal Structural Engineer’s primary purpose will be to assist the Chief Structural Engineer in designing and constructing buildings and structures that are safe and capable of withstanding the elements to which they will be exposed to. He/she will be responsible for developing the designs for Chief Structural Engineers’ validation.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must have the following qualifications;

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering from any accredited Institution.
    • Must have 7 years’ experience of professional practice in a busy organization or firm:
    • Those with Master’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering will have an added advantage.

Duties:

    • Assisting in preparing reports, designs and drawings;
    • Making calculations about loads and stresses;
    • Assisting in selecting appropriate construction materials;
    • Providing technical advice to the site Clerks;
    • Making sure that building regulations and standards approved are properly followed at the construction site;
    • Liaising with relevant professional staff such as architects;
    • Supervising and inspecting works undertaken by contractors;
    • Assisting in the Administration and Management of contracts;
    • Supervising properties and checking conditions of structures.

Terms and Conditions of Employment
The Ministry of Lands shall offer employment on Non-Established (NE) terms for a period of three (3) years.
