St. Johns Hospital is one of the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) member hospitals owned by the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu under the Mzuzu Diocesan Catholic Health Commission (MDCHC). The MDCHC is the Social and Health Arm of the Diocese of Mzuzu that exists to oversee the health services that the Catholic Church provides in the Diocese. Among other mandates, the Commission works to ensure that health services are affordably accessible to almost everyone and that the quality of health care being provided is in line with the standards and teaching of Lord Jesus Christ, the founder and sustainer of the Healing Ministry.

As one of the biggest and reliable heath institutions in the Northern part of Malawi, St. Johns Hospital has always striven to live to the philosophy and tradition of quality and reliability of health service delivery; and one of the ways to ensuring this is the belief in quality and adequacy of its human resource complement.

 

 

In its efforts of ensuring efficiency in the provision of good quality health services, the Hospital would like to fill the position of Principal Nursing Officer which currently exist within its staffing establishment.Directly reporting to the Hospital Director and indirectly to the Hospital Board, this is a principal officer position to assist in policy direction in the nursing functions of the Hospital.

Main Duties

    • Coordinating nursing services at the Hospital as well as at the Hospitals St. Patrick’s Medical Clinic in Rumphi and in all satellite Clinics
    • Planning and budgeting activities for nursing services in the hospital
    • Deploying qualified nursing staff within the Hospital nursing staff structure including St. Patrick’s Clinic and all other satellite Clinics
    • Translating nursing policy and enforcing nursing standards
    • Appraising nursing staff at the Hospital
    • Supervising the recording of data in relevant registers
    • Supervising the analysis of information and its dissemination to all relevant
      stakeholders including submission of weekly reports to the designated officers
    • Any other duties deemed relevant and reasonable for the post as assigned
      from time to time

Job Specifications

Qualifications

    • A minimum of Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing and Midwifery obtained from a recognized training institution; those with a Master’s Degree in the field will have a distinct advantage.
    • Membership with relevant professional bodies is a must

Experience

    • At least 7 years’ experience in Nursing at a similar big and busy Health institution.
    • Managerial experience in supervising institutional staff of not less than five people will be required.
    • Knowledge of CHAM health systems will be an added advantage.
