ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:

Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kazakhstan and Boston.

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations. Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) has its headquarters in Neno District with operations across the country.

We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following positions:

Position: Plumber

Reports to: Infrastructure Coordinator

Commitment: Full Time (Monday-Friday)

Working Hours: Regular Office Hours (40-45Hrs/Week)

Location: Neno District, Malawi

Position Summary

Plumber is one of the positions in the infrastructure departments who need to be motivated and well organized to support all departments in ensuring that there is a good environment for all staff and patients and other stakeholders. In this role, the plumber will be in charge of ensuring that all the WASH amenities are in good condition in both PIH and MOH supported facilities. S/he will be working hand in hand with the Infrastructure Coordinator and MOH maintenance team on a daily basis ensuring smooth implementation of all plumbing works.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Carry out plumbing repairs at all PIH/APZU hospitals, health centers, and staff housing buildings.
  • Carry out a preventative, planned maintenance program and undertake routine inspections of buildings, fixtures, and plumbing installations to assess for required repairs.
  • Perform plumbing installations (chasing wall, underground drainage pipe, septic tank, water pipe, sinks, toilets, etc.) on renovations and new construction.
  • Perform assessments of sites and create detailed materials lists.
  • Perform Water Quality checks and ensure all Boreholes, Water tanks and water supply systems are running to the standard of procedures.
  • Provide daily progress report to Infrastructure Coordinator and Maintenance Officer.
  • Be responsible for any materials and tools that belong to APZU Infrastructure department.
  • Work well in a team or independently.
  • Any other duties as allocated by line supervisor or as agreed in the yearly performance contract.

Qualifications, Attributes and Experience

  • Minimum of Trade Test Grade 1, or Advanced Certificate in Plumbing (Level 3)
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a plumber
  • Capable of using computers, with a working knowledge of the Microsoft office suite
  • Capable of Interpreting schematic diagrams to perform plumbing works
  • Capable of making hand sketch illustrations of their ideas
  • Solid technical skills and the ability to prioritize and/or delegate
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex information in layman’s terms
  • Ability to work well under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced healthcare environment
  • Proficient in organizing fellow artisans, as well as physical stamina to lift heavy equipment
