About the Programs – WMNC (Safe Water, Maternal health, New program development, Cost-effectiveness) Team

Evidence Action’s Safe Water Now program provides safe drinking water to over 10 million people across rural Uganda, Malawi, and Kenya. Recent evidence highlights that water treatment reduces all-cause child mortality by about 25%. Evidence Action’s designs deliver safe water at the source in rural settings through its established Dispensers for Safe Water (DSW) and newly launched In-Line Chlorination (ILC) interventions. Over the past year, we’ve more than doubled our footprint in East and Southern Africa and are exploring expansion into new countries, as well as developing an innovation agenda through our Accelerator process to develop the next generation of safe water programs.

The Officer will be responsible for the delivery of SWN’ program interventions at the community level through the agreed upon implementation plans and Safe Water best practices to ensure clean water access by the targeted communities The Officer will report to the Associate Area Coordinator, Machinga, with dotted reporting lines to the Area Coordinator for Mangochi Office

Key Responsibilities

  • Field execution of SWN program’s chlorine dispenser related activities in the target communities.
  • Conduct local government/stakeholders’ meetings with guidance from the Associate Coordinator.
  • Perform a water point nominations/verification surveys to obtain viable water points lists for chlorine dispenser installations.
  • Conduct community sensitization/awareness meetings and mobilize positive community participation in the program.
    Supervise chlorine dispenser/ILC installations by ensuring masons/plumbers/technicians adhere to the installation guidelines/protocols/designs.
  • Conduct education meetings at installed water points to sensitize the household users on gadget utilization and on benefits of chlorination including prevention of waterborne diseases.
  • Select and train community volunteers–promoters that will be responsible for the water points as liaison people between the program and the community.
  • Developing weekly work plans and prepare feedback reports for field activities
  • Facilitate community engagement and mobilization activities to enhance and sustain key hygiene practices adoption at the community and household levels.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as delegated by the Associate Area Coordinator.

 

Requirements

  • Minimum Diploma in Public Health, Community Development or related courses, Project management or equivalent.
  • Good language skills in English is a must. Proficiency in speaking the local language/dialect used in target areas is a definite advantage.
  • 1-2 yrs experience working with communities or social enterprises/NGOs
  • Experience using electronic data collection platforms, specifically open data kit (ODK) and survey CTO are prefered.
  • Passion to work in a rural community setting,
  • Good communication skills. Ability to communicate well within the organization and with the rural communities and local leaders.
  • Basic leadership skills in managing people, working with communities, government officers, schools and teams etc.
  • Good computer skills and comfort to advance the skills in a dynamic IT field.
  • Motor cycle riding license and skills are a MUST

Working conditions
The Officer position is primarily a field based position involving working in the field 90% of the time. This involves maneuvering in rural setting terrains with program working tools and materials on motorcycles to the designated device locations and facilities.
