ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:
Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kazakhstan and Boston.
PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations. Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) has its headquarters in Neno District with operations across the country.
We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following position:
Position : Obstetrician/Gynecologist
Reports to: Medical Director (MD)
Commitment: Full Time (Monday-Friday)
Working Hours: Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/Week)
Location: Neno District, Malawi
POSITION DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Obstetrician/Gynecologist to join our healthcare team. This is a senior position that will provide comprehensive clinical care, ensuring clinical governance, and actively participating in teaching, mentorship, research, and community-oriented care. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to clinical excellence in maternal and child health and improved quality of care and overall patient outcomes and contribute to advancing our mission of promoting healthy pregnancies and reproductive health.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Reporting to the Medical Director, the Obstetrician/Gynecologist will oversee and manage delivery of high quality obstetrics and gynecological services in alignment with hospital and health sector strategic plan along with effective implementation of social medicine in reproductive health programming to ensure delivery of excellent clinical services, teaching, and mentorship. The incumbent will also provide strategic leadership and oversight on reproductive health across the continuum of care in Neno District:
Clinical Care – 50%
- Provide high-quality obstetric and gynecological care to patients, including prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum services at Neno District and Lisungwi Community Hospitals.
Perform surgical procedures as necessary, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients.
Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs and evidence-based practices.
Work with the Medical Director, District Medical Officer and other DHMT members to improve overall patient care and patient outcomes mainly at Neno District Hospital and Lisungwi Community Hospital with supporting quality improvement and supervision planning for primary care facilities in Neno District.
Ensure the provision of appropriate up to date patients’, families’ and community health education on specialized obstetric and gynecological conditions, treatment options, health outcomes, preventive measures.
Advocate for the adoption of innovative clinical practices and technologies that can improve patient care and operational efficiency
Clinical Leadership and Governance: 20%
- Work with DHMT in consultation with the Medical Director, to ensure that Obstetrics and Gynecological
clinical systems, protocols, and procedures are established as directed by MoH national and local guidance, fully
implemented, and assessed for effectiveness with quality improvement process.
Ensure compliance with Obstetrics and Gynecological clinical guidelines and standards, promoting best practices in patient care.
Engage in regular peer reviews and audits to enhance Obstetrics and Gynecological clinical outcomes and patient safety.
In consultation with the Medical Director, support the DMO, DNO and hospital administration to strengthen clinical supply chain related to reproductive health and ensure infrastructure, equipment, medications and other supplies meet clinical needs, avoid stock-outs, and support strengthened care at facilities.
Collaborate with other departments to integrate obstetric and gynecological services with broader organizational operations, enhancing efficiency and patient care quality.
Aligns Obstetrics and Gynecology department’s goals and services with APZU/MOH strategic plan
Participation in formulation, implementation, and review of the departmental implementation plans and strategic plans at the department / APZU
Keeping updated with the latest advancements in obstetrics and gynecology, including related procedures, equipment, and medication
Ensure maintenance of accurate, detailed and up to date patient records and ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information
Spearhead the design/ continuous improvement of obstetric and gynecological services and keeping staff up to date with advancements in OBS and GYNAE practices and treatment at local, national and international level
Teaching and Mentorship: 15%
- Perform clinical teaching, mentorship and capacity building of clinicians, students, interns and other staff in
Obstetrics and Gynecology through lectures, workshops, hands-on training and participation outpatient clinics,
case reviews, audits and other activities
Support the delivery of Obstetrics and Gynecology sessions of clinical case presentations, medical literature
review, mortality and morbidity review meetings, clinical topic sessions and other medical education programs
to clinical staff and students working in Neno
Serve as a mentor to junior staff, providing guidance in clinical decision-making and professional development.
Contribute to the curriculum development for obstetrics and gynecology related training programs.
Provide innovation and leadership for strengthening supervision, direct mentorship to the hospitals including
at community and primary health facilities
Quality Improvement and Research: 10%
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of clinical protocols.
Conduct and participate in clinical research projects relevant to maternal child health and overall reproductive health, and conduct audits.
Write and publish research papers and manuscripts in reputable medical journals and present research at conferences.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to advance knowledge in reproductive and women’s health.
Support the design, implementation and dissemination of quality improvement initiatives along the entire continuum of care from community all the way to secondary care level
In collaboration with APZU Maternal and Child Health Care Manager, support the evaluation of MCH and reproductive health initiatives for programmatic and health indicator improvements in Neno district
Support in monitoring and analyzing Obstetrics and Gynae performance indicators to identify trends, areas for
improvement, and implement corrective actions to enhance patient outcomes
Community-Oriented Care: 5%
Working in Collaboration with APZU Maternal and Child Health Manager at horizontal level:
- Develop a strong implementation platform that can track and support patients holistically from their homes all the way to secondary and tertiary care levels.
Engage with the local community and other internal stakeholders i.e. communication section to promote awareness and education on reproductive health issues.
Ensure effective implementation and provision of quality health services in MCH outreach programs/clinics
Provide expertise on emerging issues of public health concern related to obstetrics and gynecology
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
MBBS, MD or equivalent with specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology
At least 10 years working experience, preferably at tertiary or district hospital level or non-governmental organizations
If Malawian, active registration or registrable with the Medical Council of Malawi by the time of the agreed-to
job start date will be required.
Proven experience of clinical practice, teaching with quality improvement and research
Proven experience in planning, implementing and evaluating strategic plans and quality improvement work with providing support to large, diverse teams
Commitment to patient-centered, result-oriented care and community service
Work in a dynamic team environment, with a respectful and supportive attitude, alongside both clinical,
community, and administrative staff from MoH and PIH
Willingness to live and work full-time in a rural setting
