JOB ADVERTISEMENT – NATIONAL INTERN FOR AGFIN PROJECT.

1. Brief Program Information

Under its special initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems “ (Sonderinitiative Leben ohne Hunger – Transformation der Agrar- und Ernährungssysteme), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with the implementation of the Global Project “Promotion of agricultural finance for Agri-based enterprises in rural areas” (Globalvorhaben – Förderung der Agrarfinanzierung für agrarbasierte Unternehmen im ländlichen Raum), (GV AgFin).

Using agricultural and financial systems development approaches, GV AgFin aims at bridging the gap between the specific financial needs of the agricultural sector (demand side) and the provision of financial services for the agricultural sector on the supply side. In a concerted approach that combines interventions on the ‘demand’ and ‘supply’ side, the main objective of the GV AgFin is to improve access of farms and Agri-based enterprises to financial services adapted to their business models.

To achieve the objective, the global project uses an overall conceptual approach that focuses on three project components:

  • (Global) New knowledge products to improve the supply of adapted financial services for farms and Agri-based rural enterprises are developed for both supply- and demand side.
  • (Demand side) Expertise of farmers and managers of Agri-based rural enterprises on the use of adapted financial services has increased; and
  • (Supply side) Capacities of selected financial institutions for the development of adapted financial services for farms and Agri-based enterprises have increased.

GV AgFin in Malawi

The GV AgFin started its operations in 01/2016 in Benin and Zambia and was extended to Cameroon, Mali, and Nigeria in 01/2018. In December 2019, the BMZ approved the further extension of the global project to three further countries including Malawi. The project approach in Malawi follows the three proposed project components regarding the above-mentioned activities on the supply and demand side. The direct target groups of the recruiting GIZ project are farmers’ organizations and Agri-based SMEs with viable business models and related markets for their agricultural products, but with little or no access to tailored financial services, mainly in the promoted value chains (VCs) of the Global Projects including: “Sustainable Aquatic Foods” (SAF); “Food and Nutrition Security Programme” (FNSP); and “Energizing Development Programme” (EnDev) and the bilateral programme “More income and employment in rural areas along selected value chains” (MIERA). Other implementing partners comprise of Financial Institutions (FIs) i.e., commercial banks, microfinance institutions, Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs under MUSCCO), and other financial service providers (e.g., development financial institutions, crowd funder, angel investors, etc.).

To support the implementation and related organizational, communication, administrative and monitoring of the project focus areas, the GIZ-AgFin project is interested to engage a national intern for a 6-month period, given the high priorities of the project to the end of 2024.
