The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Funeral Parlour is a strategic business unit established to provide high quality and dignified mortuary and related services to its valued clients. The Parlour is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the positions of Mortuary Attendants.

JOB SUMMARY

The Mortuary Attendant reports to the Parlour Administrator. This appointment will be on a two-year contract subject to renewal at the end of two years. The position requires dedication as the mortuary attendant will be expected to work day or night shifts and will involve travel on service duty even at short notice.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receiving and registering decedents at the parlour.
  • Preparing decedents for wakes, funerals and interment by embalming, washing, dressing and cosmetically enhancing as well as casketing including reconstruction.
  • Advising the family of the deceased on all pertinent matters relating to the as well as any issue which may be deemed pertinent in relation to the funeral arrangements.
  • Assisting in funeral ceremonies when required. This includes transporting of decedents to the funeral service and setting up the equipment (for example church trolley, grave lowering machine, gazebo’s, PA System) including the casket/coffin; flowers and any displays as required by the families.
  • Assisting in repatriation of decedents from points of death to the mortuary and, when required, to the final place.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of an MSCE certificate and two years’ work experience or four years work experience in Funeral homes or similar business.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to work both independently as well as with minimum supervision.
  • Cooperative, flexible and dependable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, instilling trust and confidence.
  • High integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.

REQUIRED CONDUCT AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Demonstrating responsiveness when conducting Parlour duties.
  • Maintaining client confidentiality and ensuring the safety of Funeral Parlour equipment and deceased belongings.
  • Ensuring cleanliness of all the Parlour premises at all times.
  • Demonstrating punctuality and sober behavior at all times.
  • Demonstrating respect for all clientele and fellow members of staff at all times.
  • Have a good understanding of the customs and traditions of various religious and ethnic groups.
  • Be familiar with health codes, laws, and other regulations concerning embalming, transportation, burial, etc. and must have a strong sense of personal ethics.

REMUNERATION

The Parlour offers attractive remuneration to the successful candidate commensurate withVqualifications and technical skills of the successful candidates.
