POSITION IDENTIFICATION

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE): In summary, why does the job exist?

• To be a registered member of the Medical Council of Malawi (if hired after 2016) and act in a professional manner at all times in accordance with their rules and guidelines.
• The Laboratory technician carries out ISO 15189:2012 and/or GCLP/GCP compliant laboratory testing as appropriate, which will include, but may not be limited to: receiving and booking in specimens, preparing specimens for testing and storage, documentation and record keeping.

I. Quality Assurance and Improvement

• To adhere to the ISO 15189:2012, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good laboratory Clinical practice (GCLP)regulations, MLW Laboratory Quality Management Policy, Quality Management System, and all associated documents and requirements.
• To Participate in QC/QI for area of specialty and Lab indicators.
• To carry out sample processing and testing in accordance with approved standard operating procedures (SOPs).

II. Documentation

• To record, report statistical information for master files.
• To follow laboratory policy for data retrieval, record keeping, specimen identification, requisition, reporting, and charting procedures.

III. Communication

• To be active in all areas relating to communication, including actively engaging with feedback processes, including surveys to ensure continual improvement of the laboratory.
• To Use positive interpersonal skills to educate/support lab customers and promote success of team members.
• To Use clear and concise verbal and written communication with staff and the public.

IV. Health & Safety

• To follow safe practice, always respecting the safety of fellow workers as laid out in the MLW Health and Safety Guidelines, and any specific departmental safety protocols.
• To ensure that all areas of the laboratory section are kept clean and tidy by implementing a routine cleaning and disinfection schedule as instructed.
• To attend at least once a year, the quarterly scheduled Health and Safety sensitizations.
• To immediately notify the Line Manager of all accidents, and potential hazards.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent degree which is recognized by the Medical Council of Malawi
• Registered member of Medical Council of Malawi
• Previous experience is desirable but not essential.

• Excellent IT skills
• Good presentation skills, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills
• Good report writing skills.
• Good clinical practice skills
• Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
• Efficient and well organised, with excellent attention to detail
• Enthusiastic and able to work under pressure and to deadlines.
