Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) is a local organization which was enacted by Parliament under Chapter 18:09 of the Laws of Malawi as a sole voluntary aid society auxiliary to the public authorities. It’s head offices is located in Area 14, along Presidential Way, P.O Box 30096, Capital City, Lilongwe 3. The Society’s mission is to alleviate human suffering and improve quality of life of vulnerable people through relief, development activities and dissemination of the movement’s fundamental principles.

Malawi Red Cross Society is urgently seeking to engage the services of a suitably qualified, motivated, capable and experienced individuals to fill the vacant position  of Mental Health & Psychosocial Support Officer based at its headquarters in Area 14, Lilongwe

Purpose of the Job.

Support all aspects of planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting on MHPSS and caring for staff and volunteers MRCS activities. Further, the candidate will also ensure the implementation mainstreaming approach to increase Psychological First Aid knowledge and skills among staff and volunteers to enhance their preparedness and ability to offer basic psychosocial support to volunteers and staff who have experienced distressing situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Mental Health & Psychosocial Support Officer will be responsible for the following:

  1. Support implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of the MRCS’s Mental Health and Psychosocial Support activities
  • Establish a referral system, develop templates and procedures for follow up of referrals and support mapping of referral services at a district level.
  • Ensure the referral maps are reguraly updated at a district level.
  • Train volunteers and/or train trainers in community-based protection and psychosocial support approaches and interventions such as psychological first aid, psychoeducation, Safe Spaces (eg. community centres).
  • Montoring MHPSS services by organizing field visits and following and tracking workplans
  • Complete any administrative taks for the good implementation plan
  • Develop individual activity reports and monthly narrative reports in a timely manner
  • Follow up with volunteers to monitor how things are going and get their feedback for improvement
  • Support the MRCS scale up Ppsychological First Aid Mainstreaming Plan
  • Provide support to maintain and cascade the peer-to-peer system approach in the different districits selected
  • Facilitate group supportive meetings for volunteers supporting MRCS Emergency interventions at a district level when needed.
  • Support volunteers required immediate psychological or emotional support thought psychological first aid when needed.
  1. Support MRCS MHPSS Plan
  • Raise awareness on MHPSS at all levels
  • Contribute to the assessments, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of MHPSS activities at HQ and branch/field level
  • Support the development of tools necessary to implement activities
  • Develop individual activity reports and monthly narrative reports in a timely manner
  • Follow up with staff, volunteers and beneficiaries to monitor how things are going and get their feedback for improvement
  • Undertake regular field visits
  • Contribute to developing adequate contextualized and relevant MHPSS guidelines and tools, including training materials, IEC material, M&E tools, etc.
  • Contribute to the development of MRCS MHPSS longer term plans.
  • Develop volunteer profiles, recruit, screen, train, mentor or supervise MHPSS volunteers
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned
  • Ensure the confidentiality of volunteers and staff
  • Undertake travel as requested

EDUCATION & PROFFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree in Social Work, psychology or related field
  • 1-year experience in related field
  • Knowledge on mental health and psychosocial support
  • Effective communication of written and spoken English
  • Good computer skills, in Excel, Word and Power point,
  • Good community mobilisation and interpersonal skills
