5. POSITION TITLE: Mechanic, FSN 5.
6. MARKET VALUE: $9,583 – $14, 861 (basic salary, paid in local currency Kwacha at the prevailing exchange rate), equivalent to FSN-5. In accordance with AIDAR Appendix J and the Local Compensation Plan of United States Mission, Malawi (Effective April 7, 2024). Final compensation will be negotiated within the listed market value.
7. PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: Five (5) years renewable, estimated to start o/a January 2025.
8. PLACE OF PERFORMANCE: Lilongwe, Malawi with possible travel as stated in the Position Description.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The position is in the Motor Pool Section, Executive Office, USAID Malawi, Lilongwe. The primary purpose of this position is to perform journeyman mechanic level major and minor overhaul, repair work and maintenance on the Missions motor vehicles.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan service schedule for all ICASS subscribed vehicles.
- Examines workshop orders to determine whether the service should be done inhouse or outsourced. Perform diagnostic tests to determine nature and extent of repair work necessary. Use various key performance indicators (KIP’s) such as oil analysis, noise and vibration monitoring and exhaust gas monitoring.
- Preforms major and minor overhauls and repair on all ICASS subscribed vehicles to improve reliability and to assure dependability, safety, and compliance.
- Use all typical tools and equipment of the trade, including testing and analysis equipment.
- Adjust or replaces malfunctioning or defective parts appropriately.
- Monitor work and services provided by local vendors to ensure that the work is performed according to vehicle manufacture standards and is completed in a timely manner using quality parts.
- Prepare parts lists numbers and quantities of vehicle parts to replenish stock levels through ordering.
- Operate a forklift.
- Certify all pool and agency dedicated vehicles before they undertake field trips.
- Costing of parts and labor used during preventive maintenance and repairs done on all ICASS subscribed vehicles.
- Driving personnel on official field trips within and outside of Lilongwe.
- Keeping the workshop clean tidy, free from hazards and all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at hand always
- Install Drivecam cameras on all ICASS subscribed vehicles and rectifies auto electrical faults related Drivecam cameras.
- Act as after-hours motor vehicle mechanic by responding to emergency calls.

- Installing all safety and security features e.g. Personal Tracking Locator (PTL) in USG vehicles and attend/replacing them when they are faulty.
- Performing vehicle checks, certifying vehicles going on official field trips before drivers and officers undertake trips.
- Vehicle handover with drivers returning from official field trips making sure that all tools in the vehicle are not missing.
- Keeping track of vendor managed inventory parts, making sure that reconciliation is done at the end of each month. Stock with the vendor (batteries and tires) should balance with stock that has been taken.

- Conducting ad hoc visits to external garages to monitor the work they are doing on all USG vehicles and certifying the vehicle spare parts used.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION
- Education: The minimum qualification for this position is completion of secondary school, vocational training or apprenticeship with Grade 1 mechanical/City guilds certificate.
- Prior Work Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ experience of automotive mechanic experience.
- Language Proficiency: Level 3 English and Chichewa or any local language (good working knowledge) is required.
- Job Knowledge: Must have a full automotive mechanic trade knowledge.
- Skills and Abilities: Must be able to operate a forklift, must have a local driver’s license (SADC classes C, C1 or its equivalent).
