Lindian Resources Ltd, a leader in the exploration and development of strategic minerals for energy efficiency, has obtained the necessary licenses to launch a rare earths mineral mining project at Kangankunde, Balaka District, Malawi.

Recognized as one of the top hard rock rare earths deposits globally, the site is located about 30 km from the town of Balaka. Construction of a stage 1 development will commence in Q3 2024, with production expected to start in mid-2025. The mine boasts an estimated life of over 100 years with expansion plans following the commissioning of Stage 1. Initial efforts will concentrate on the development of the management and senior team to undertake operational readiness activities
and establishing robust systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Exciting mine-based opportunities exist with Lindian Resources as we commence the recruitment of key roles in our organisational structure, these include General Manager Operations, Manager Mining, Manager Plant & Engineering, Manager Environment & Community, Manager Business Services, Senior Mine Geologist, Site Manager and Health & Safety Officer.

MANAGER MINING

PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Manager Mining will oversee the overall operational management of the open pit mine operations to deliver production in a safe, efficient, and effective manner aligned with the Company’s strategy.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Champion a culture that surpasses SHEC standards through visible leadership, risk mitigation, and strict adherence to regulatory and company policies.
  • Oversee the management of mining operations post-commissioning to ensure safe, efficient, and effective production in line with the company’s strategic objectives.
  • Lead mining operational readiness, conceptualize and implement strategies to achieve strategic mining goals, and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Oversee long-term and short-term mine planning and design, including the approval of detailed schedules and layouts for dredging and other operational units.
  • Manage mining budgets, actively engage in cost control, and continuously seek opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Set production targets, track progress against plans, and coordinate with operational teams to ensure adherence to monthly and yearly budget targets.
  • Provide expert advice and consultancy on mining projects, evaluate new techniques and products, and implement mine improvement projects.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and high performance, manage team development, set objectives, and coach team members to excel under pressure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE

  • A degree in Mining Engineering is essential, with the completion of a Leadership Development Programme being advantageous.
  • At least 10 years in production, with 5 -10 years in open pit production, mine engineering, and planning.
  • A track record of working in Africa, transferring skills, and Greenfields experience would be advantageous.
  • Expertise in mine planning software such as Surpac, Mine Sched, and Whittle, with an in-depth understanding of mining operations, regulatory compliance, and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with the mining industry in Malawi/Africa is preferred.
  • Strong leadership and strategic planning capabilities, ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage diverse teams.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and proven ability to maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills, with excellent stakeholder engagement, adaptability, resilience, and a keen attention to detail.
  • Registration with a recognized Engineering professional body and certifications or membership in international mining engineering associations, e.g. Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME).
  • Valid Drivers Licence
