Background

According to the Strategic Plan (2017 – 2025) of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu, one of the six

core values is ‘Stewardship of and for God’s Creation’. The Diocese believes that if human

beings live in harmony with all of nature and creation, including the natural environment,

doing God’s work in His vineyard would be easier and attainment of the Kingdom of Heaven,

a possible mission. We recognise that resources at our disposal are not our own, we are only

stewards of God’s creation.

 

 

The Diocese has three main focus areas: a) Pastoral Care; b) Human and Social Development

and c) Institutional Development. Under the Human and Social Development focus area, the

main strategic goal is: “To promote sustainable socioeconomic development among

individuals, families and communities in the Diocese of Mzuzu.” Under this focus area of its

strategic objectives are “To improve Sustainable Livelihoods in the Diocese”.

It is for this reason that the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu is calling for applications to fill the

vacant positions under CADECOM department as follows:

1. Position: Laudato Si Officer, LSO (1)

Duty Station: Mzuzu (Secretariat)

• To oversee & manage the smooth, efficient and effective implementation of Mzuzu Diocese

Laudato Si Project and Model Farming Training centre.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan, manage and facilitate implementation of project activities according to project

designs.

• Mobilize youth, communities and institutions to participate in capacity building

interventions which include but not limited to forest tour, cosmic walk, on-farm

demonstrations, livestock demonstration, agriculture and environmental technology

demonstration

• Train youth and other relevant stakeholders to have improved knowledge, attitude and

practice of climate change and related ecosystem-based risk-reduction processes to

improve agro biodiversity, reduce deforestation and soil/land degradation, increase

afforestation and improve land productivity

• Coordinate with other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of project

interventions.

• Lead in the management and development of Katoto forest. This include but not limited

to reafforestation, afforestation, development of fire breaks, keeping the forest clean of litter and dumping, engaging the local community to protect the forest, keep recognised

roads in good condition (especially main road leading to Marcel House and Jobidon

Offices, closing un-recognised roads, building of the perimeter wall and other related

infrastructure as outlines in project documentations.

• Ensure that the Model Farming Training Centre is efficiently managed, that there is a

continuous supply of vegetables, plants and seedlings at all times and that the facilities at

the Training Centre are optimally used fully for sustainability of the Centre.

• Ensure Cross-cutting (gender, disability, Child protection, HIV and AIDS and

environmental) Issues are effectively taken on board in all program plans and activities

• Compile/Develop work plans and progress reports as required by management, donors

and other stakeholders.

• Oversee workers assigned to Laudato Si and LIFE Projects. He or She should keep good

relations with all workers.

• Perform any other duties as assigned by management from time to time

Qualifications

• Diploma in Agriculture, Forest, Environmental Management, Horticulture or similar field

with a passion for the Environment. Those with working experience will have an added

advantage.

•Computer skills required, including experience using MS Windows and MS Office packages

(Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

• Experience using virtual platforms such as MS Teams or Zoom for workshops and

trainings.

• Experience in monitoring projects and collecting relevant data.
