The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is inviting applications from suitably qualified, highly motivated, and experienced individuals to be considered for the following vacant positions in various establishments of the University:

Laboratory Technician

a. Role Summary

The Hospital Laboratory Technician will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The successful candidate will ensure that all tests are conducted in accordance with the hospital’s protocols and international standards for accuracy, reliability, and efficiency.

b. Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests in areas such as hematology, microbiology, chemistry, and immunology.
  • Collect, process, and analyze patient specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue samples.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring that it is functioning properly and calibrated as required.
  • Record and report test results accurately and promptly to medical professionals.
  • Follow established laboratory safety protocols, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain and update laboratory documentation, including patient records and inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Participate in quality control and assurance programs to ensure the accuracy of test results.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support patient care and treatment.
  • Stay up-to-date with advances in laboratory technology and testing methods.

c. Qualification, Skills, Experience, and Attributes

  • At least a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a hospital or medical laboratory setting.
  • Valid registration and licensure with the relevant authority.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety standards and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and diagnostic tools.
  • Good understanding of medical terminology and laboratory reporting systems.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Terms and Conditions of Engagement

All the successful candidates will be engaged on an initial 2-year contract before they can be
considered for permanent appointment based on satisfactory performance. Remuneration will be in line with LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service (2023) applicable to staff on fixed-term contract.
