Overview
UNC Project Malawi, a biomedical research, training and service organization based in Lilongwe, invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to fill the following positions:
LABORATORY SUPERVISORS (CELL PROCESSING LAB AND SEROLOGY)
Job Summary
Performs testing in assigned areas of the Laboratory. Demonstrates skills and knowledge of assigned areas and assists other Laboratory Technicians in the performance of their duties. Follows Good Clinical Laboratory Practices and quality requirements of the UNC Project.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
Administrative
- Develops and manages shift schedules to ensure adequate lab coverage of the department and oversees daily lab work
- Monitors stock levels of reagents, consumables, and equipment for the department and coordinates ordering from the laboratory stores
- Ensures accurate maintenance of lab logs, SOPs, equipment maintenance records, and quality control documentation.
- Ensures adherence to biosafety, chemical safety, and other regulatory standards and conducts training to departmental staff and compliance checks.
- Assesses staff performance and provides feedback to the laboratory managements Identifies training needs and facilitates staff development initiatives.
Technical
- Perform processing of Laboratory samples according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements.
- Perform Laboratory tests on scheduled benches as assigned by the
- Perform freezer sample storage and retrieval according to current protocols.
- Perform reagent preparation and equipment maintenance according to training and assignment.
- Maintain a high level of precision and accuracy for all work performed.
- Respond to technical and logistical problems encountered in the Laboratory in a timely and efficient manner.
- Provide input as required for updating Laboratory procedures and procedure manual.
- Prepare Laboratory samples for shipment as needed.
- Meet or exceed continuing education requirements for the position.
Support
- Assist with implementation of new study protocols, new instrumentation, new methodology and training as needed.
- Assist with training and problem solving as needed.
Safety
- Follow all Laboratory procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective equipment and awareness of blood-borne pathogens.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
General
- Demonstrate a cooperative attitude in relationships with co-workers and other personnel.
- Meet or exceed quality assurance levels of the laboratory .
- Maintain confidentiality of patients, patient results and project operations.
- Serve as an effective representative to physicians, nurses, counsellors and visitors in a courteous and empathetic manner.
- Follow Laboratory and collaboration polices.
- Use all facilities and supplies with care and in a cost-effective manner.
- Assist or carry out other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor, Assistant Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Manager.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biomedical Science, or a related field.
- Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Laboratory Data Management System (LDMS).
- Registered with Medical Council of Malawi.
- Minimum of 1-2 year’s experience in a Laboratory setting.
- Sample management expertise: Knowledge of proper sample labeling, storage conditions, and chain-of custody procedures.
- Shipping regulations & protocols: Understanding of how to package and ship biological samples safely and in compliance with regulations (e.g., IATA for biological specimens).
- Documentation and record keeping: Accurate recording of sample details, shipment tracking, and ensuring documentation compliance.
- Attention to detail: Ensuring data integrity and proper handling to prevent sample mix-ups or loss.
