THE ORGANISATION

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA) was established through the Atomic Energy Act Number 16 of 2011 with the purpose of providing adequate protection for people and the environment in present and future generations against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. The Mandate of AERA is to exercise regulatory control over the importation, exportation, production, processing, handling, use, holding, storage, transportation and disposal of radiation sources, nuclear material and other radioactive materials in order to protect the public, workers and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

In accordance with the foregoing mandate, the vision of AERA is to be an excellent regulatory authority in ensuring nuclear and radiation protection of the public, workers and the environment. The mission of AERA is to regulate the usage of radiation sources, nuclear material and other radioactive materials in an effective, efficient and transparent manner for the protection of people, workers and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

In order to effectively pursue its mandate, AERA requires a competent and motivated work force. Accordingly, applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill various vacant positions tenable at its Offices in Lilongwe. They are challenging positions requiring mature and judicious persons with well-rounded experience, strong business acumen and entrepreneurial attitude, able to meet agreed performance targets and move the Authority towards achieving its mandate. The specific positions being advertised are as follows:

Inspection and Enforcement Officer (Medical) – Grade AE 4

Number of Posts: Two (2)

Reporting to: Inspection and Enforcement Manager

Purpose of the Job

To implement inspection and enforcement program in medical facilities and practices.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

a) Conducting planned and adhoc inspections;
b) Monitoring compliance with the Act and Regulations as well as license and permit conditions issued by AERA;
c) Compiling inspection and other technical reports and recommending improvements where there is non-compliance;
d) Ensuring that suitable remedial actions are implemented in the event of non-compliance;
e) Recommending enforcement action to be taken where there has been serious violation of the Act and Regulations as well as license and permit conditions issued by AERA;
f) Implementing section work plans;
g) Preparing periodic reports; and
h) Performing any other duties relevant to the post as may be assigned.

Minimum required qualification and work experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in either Physics, Nuclear Science or closely related Science disciplines from an accredited institution recognized by National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).
  • One (1) years proven experience in radiation safety and security.
