ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION 

Established in 2019, Wona Collective is a feminist women-led arts collective, media production company and communications consultancy based in Lilongwe, Malawi. Our vision as Wona is to have more documented stories of Malawians created by Malawians, particularly stories that are often erased or left untold: the stories of women and marginalised groups. To fulfil our vision, we use arts and media to create and curate content on women and marginalized groups.

JOB PURPOSE

With the support and guidance from the Wona Collective Directors, the Illustrator will visually communicate ideas, concepts, and narratives through creative and engaging imagery. The Illustrator will produce illustrations which will be used for online and print media.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop initial concepts, rough ideas, and sketches based on project requirements.
  • Develop detailed illustrations based on approved concepts, using various mediums such as traditional drawing tools, digital software, or a combination of both.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and the Wona Collective team to understand project needs, provide progress updates, and incorporate feedback throughout the creative process.
  • Ensure that illustrations maintain a tone and visual identity in line with the project’s objectives and brand guidelines.
  • Manage time effectively to meet project deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards in artwork delivery.
  • Conduct research as needed to accurately depict subjects, settings, or themes within illustrations, and plan compositions accordingly.
  • Receive and incorporate feedback from clients, team members, or other stakeholders to refine and improve illustrations as needed.
  • Address challenges and find creative solutions to visual storytelling problems that may arise during the illustration process.

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Excellent knowledge of Illustration Software (i.e. Adobe Illustrator)
  • Excellent understanding of fundamental design principles (e.g. Composition, color theory, perspective, typography)
  • Excellent skill in drawing and painting techniques
  • Ability to work with vector graphics to create scalable illustrations, icons, and graphics that can be resized without losing quality.
  • Understanding of various file formats for digital illustrations, including raster formats like JPEG, PNG, and TIFF, as well as vector formats like SVG, AI, and EPS.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

EXPERIENCE 

3 years’ relevant work experience in a subject area or a specialized field.
