Lindian Resources Ltd, a leader in the exploration and development of strategic minerals for energy efficiency, has obtained the necessary licenses to launch a rare earths mineral mining project at Kangankunde, Balaka District, Malawi.

Recognized as one of the top hard rock rare earths deposits globally, the site is located about 30 km from the town of Balaka. Construction of a stage 1 development will commence in Q3 2024, with production expected to start in mid-2025. The mine boasts an estimated life of over 100 years with expansion plans following the commissioning of Stage 1. Initial efforts will concentrate on the development of the management and senior team to undertake operational readiness activities
and establishing robust systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Exciting mine-based opportunities exist with Lindian Resources as we commence the recruitment of key roles in our organisational structure, these include General Manager Operations, Manager Mining, Manager Plant & Engineering, Manager Environment & Community, Manager Business Services, Senior Mine Geologist, Site Manager and Health & Safety Officer.

HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

The Health and Safety Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of all employees, contractors, and visitors at the mine site. Tasked with the practical implementation and maintenance of Occupational Health and Safety policies, programs, procedures, and practices, the H&S Officer is
responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable H&S legislation and company requirements. This role is pivotal in promoting a culture of Health & Safety stewardship within the mining operation, contributing to the overall sustainability and efficiency of the mine.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as a safety leader, ensuring the health and safety of all employees and contractors align with company policies and statutory requirements. Manage medical surveillance protocols, onsite paramedics, and emergency response procedures.
  • Promote a culture that exceeds standard health and safety norms through proactive management. Conduct regular safety training, manage compliance training, and maintain
    training records.
  • Perform daily and weekly safety inspections, monthly audits, and manage all health and safety administration and reporting, including sharing safety lessons and best practices throughout the organization.
  • Oversee the risk management system, including the implementation and tracking of Baseline and Issue-Based Risk Assessments, analysing health and safety trends to lead initiatives aimed at reducing incidents.
  • Ensure that all contractors adhere to legal and company health and safety standards through effective contractor pack management, induction, auditing, and inspection.
  • Maintain and update a register of standards, codes of practice, standard operating procedures, and special instructions to ensure ongoing compliance and safety at the mine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE

  • National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent.
  • Additional certifications in health and safety management highly advantageous.
  • 7+ years’ experience in a Mining environment, with at least 3 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
  • Proven track record in managing onsite health functions, risk assessment techniques, and accident investigation, with experience in Africa and Greenfields operations highly advantageous.
  • Comprehensive understanding of mine safety, environmental regulations, and sustainable mining practices, and best practices for plant and opencast operations.
  • Strong capabilities in health and safety management systems, contractor management, and risk assessment, with proficiency in conducting safety training and leading health and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with a focus on proactive safety leadership and effective training delivery.
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, adeptness in problem-solving and risk management skills.
  • Registration with relevant professional health and safety bodies in Malawi or internationally recognized institutions.
  • Valid Driver’s license
