HEALTH ECONOMICS AND POLICY UNIT (HEPU) 

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a comprehensive health and allied  sciences higher learning institution established with the primary function of training health workers  and conduct health research. The Health Economics and Policy Unit (HEPU) is a unit under the  Department of Health Systems and Policy within the School of Global and Public Health  (SOGAPH) at KUHeS which was jointly established with Ministry of Health. With support from the  Health Services Joint Fund (HSJF), the Health Economics and Policy Unit (HEPU) has been  tasked with conducting health economics and policy analyses. The goal is to provide evidence for  policy initiatives that will improve the capacity to generate and use health economics evidence in  health sector decision-making. The HEPU aims to enhance the ability to make informed policy  decisions by applying economic principles to health issues. Through this initiative, the unit seeks  to strengthen the link between research evidence and policy formulation in the health sector. The  HEPU would therefore like to engage the following capacities to be part of their vibrant team of  researchers and policy analysts:

Health Economics Research Fellow 

Location: Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Lilongwe

Job Type: Full-time,

Duration: 1 year, with possibility of Extension

Job Summary: 

We are seeking a dedicated and talented Health Economics Research Fellow to contribute to our  research initiatives at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Health Economics and Policy Unit.  The Research Fellow will be involved in conducting research and analysis in the field of health

economics, supporting ongoing projects, and contributing to the generation of evidence to inform  healthcare policy and decision-making. This position offers an opportunity to gain valuable  research and policy analysis experience and develop expertise in health economics research  methodologies.

Key Responsibilities: 

✓ Assist in the design and implementation of health economics research pro under the  guidance of senior researchers.

✓ Conduct literature reviews and data collection activities to support research projects. ✓ Perform statistical analyses and econometric modeling using relevant software tools  (e.g., Stata, R) to analyze healthcare data.

✓ Contribute to the development of economic models for cost-effectiveness analysis and  budget impact assessments.

✓ Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support the preparation of research proposals  and grant applications.

✓ Prepare conference and research reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication  in peer-reviewed journals.

✓ Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences to enhance professional development  and knowledge in health economics.

Required Qualifications and Skills: 

✓ Master’s degree (MSc) in Health Economics or Economics.

✓ Solid understanding of health economics principles and methodologies. ✓ Proficiency in statistical analysis software (e.g., Stata, R) and experience with  econometric modeling.

✓ Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and communicate quantitative research  findings.

✓ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

✓ Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. ✓ Prior research experience through project evaluation, academic projects, internships, or  research assistantships is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications: 

✓ Familiarity with healthcare databases and health economic evaluation techniques. ✓ Experience in conducting systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses. ✓ Interest in health policy, healthcare systems, and outcomes research. ✓ Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize deadlines effectively
