HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER – MZUZU AND LIWONDE
Background
Based on its operational requirements, Farmers World wishes to recruit a highly motivated and suitably qualified individual to fill in the following existing vacancies which are tenable both in Mzuzu and Liwonde.
Position Purpose
To promote workplace safety, environmental compliance, and overall well-being by conducting risk assessments, coordinating safety committee, developing, and implementing EHS systems, investigating incidents, conducting emergency drills and equipment inspections, performing audits, and driving the continuous improvement of business unit and group standards.
Main duties
- Maintain accurate records of EHSS activities, incidents, audits, and compliance to demonstrate adherence to standards and track progress over time.
- Generate, document, and review Baseline Risk Assessments, plant inspections, and hygiene surveys to ensure compliance with legal and organisational requirements.
- Assist in investigating incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence and enhance safety practices.
- Conduct detailed EHSS training sessions, including operational control training and SHE inductions for new employees and contractors, ensuring awareness of safety protocols and compliance requirements.
- Perform regular plant inspections and audits to ensure compliance with legal, safety, and environmental regulations, documenting findings and corrective actions.
- Plan, coordinate, and conduct emergency drills and ensure emergency response plans are communicated, executed, and regularly updated.
- Conduct assigned audits, prepare checklists, document findings, and follow up on corrective actions to close non-conformities and maintain system integrity.
- Foster a positive safety culture by leading SHE campaigns, promoting good practices, and encouraging collective responsibility for workplace safety.
- Identify risks in the work environment, recommend mitigation strategies, and monitor the implementation of safety measures to prevent incidents.
- Assist the SHEQ Manager and superiors in implementing strategic EHSS initiatives, fulfilling assigned tasks, and driving continuous improvement in safety and compliance practices.
- Facilitate ongoing refresher training.
- Develop, document, and review SHEQ procedures, SOPs, and the Compliance Obligation Register on a regular basis to ensure alignment with evolving standards and regulations.
- Implement, and monitor waste recycling initiatives and energy reduction steps, collecting and reporting data to support sustainability goals.
- Conduct and analyse risk assessments to identify potential hazards, addressing risks proactively to maintain a safe and compliant working environment.
- Monitor adherence to EHSS regulations, internal policies, and SHEQ standards, escalating unresolved issues and reporting on corrective actions and incident closures.
- Execute regular health and safety audits and facility inspections to identify hazards, ensure compliance, and recommend improvements to enhance workplace safety.
- Lead by example to foster a positive EHSS culture, promoting good practices and encouraging collective responsibility for safety and compliance.
- Compile, document, and submit statutory and audit reports for review, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with governance and legal standards.
- Ensure compliance with external audit requirements, and document findings to uphold governance and safety standards.
Desirable Qualifications, Work experience and Personal Specifications
- Degree in Environmental Health or Occupational Health and Safety
- At least 2-3 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Strong problem-solving skills and Reasoning
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
