TEAM AND ROLE OVERVIEW

  • The Head Agronomist is being recruited, in a full-time position, to be a part of aQysta Malawi’s team.

  • The Head Agronomist will be responsible for strengthening the knowledge of smallholder farmers in Malawi on growing for high-value crops to increase income. The work will be a significant contribution to the training/knowledge component of the GROWN farm incubator development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Extent aQysta’s crop types evaluation on economic and practical suitability/limitations in the local conditions with field work research.
  • Collect field data on e.g. local soil composition to determine nutrient and fertilizer needs
  • Provide advise to end user farmers on agricultural practices to optimize quality, yield and income. The advise will be on irrigation (with hydro/solar powered pumps), fertilizer application, growing periods, seed types, planting preparations, weeding & pest control and prevent diseases, for high value crops, based on local soil conditions.
  • Consult farmers and team about environmental sustainable practices
  • Monitor plants growth and health
  • Recommend solution to farmers when problems occur.
  • Develop/update training manuals for selected high value crops that can be used for the training of farmers.
  • Assist to implement the farmer training
  • Provide feedback about the training to aQysta
  • Provide support in potential scaling of the model in Malawi, but also make it adaptable to other aQysta focus countries, with possible traveling to those other countries.
  • Develop agriculture intervention programs of the company
  • Develop knowledge on scientific farming (crop calendars, farming manuals) for selected crops to increase yield and profitability in focus countries of aQysta
  • Collect and analyze data related to agriculture intervention programs of aQysta
  • Building partnerships with agriculture related knowledge and development organizations
  • Build agriculture value chain partnerships

BACKGROUND AND SKILLS

  • Intrinsically driven (motivated)
  • BA/Master agri-business, agriculture, agronomy or related field
  • Experienced in providing agricultural advise and developing related documentation materials
  • Knowledge and experience of agri-business practices with smallholder farmers is preferred
  • Passionate about renewable energy technologies, water and agriculture sector
  • Ability to work independently (set and meet own targets)
  • Good English language skills: written and verbally.
  • Willing to travel to rural areas within Malawi.
  • Willingness to travel internationally, to surrounding countries and other focus countries if needed (Nepal and India)
  • Organized and punctual (meet deadlines).
  • Team-player
  • In possession of a valid drivers license
