Job Summary

The Goat Farm Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of goat farming operations, including animal care, breeding, milking, feeding, and facility maintenance. The manager ensures the herd’s health and welfare, supervises staff, maintains records, and implements sustainable practices to meet production goals. This role requires hands-on agricultural expertise, leadership skills, and knowledge of animal husbandry.

Key Responsibilities

1. Herd Management:
   • Monitor and maintain the health, nutrition, and welfare of goats, including routine vaccinations, deworming, hoof trimming, and medical treatments.
   • Oversee breeding programs, including selecting breeding stock, managing kidding, and ensuring genetic diversity.
   • Coordinate shearing or grooming for fiber-producing goats.
2. Farm Operations:
   • Plan and manage feed for goats, including sourcing and storing feed, pasture management, and supplemental nutrition.
   • Maintain farm infrastructure, such as barns, fences, water systems, and feeding equipment.
   • Implement biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
   • Oversee waste management and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
3. Staff Supervision:
   • Hire, train, and supervise farm workers, assigning tasks such as feeding and cleaning.
   • Schedule work shifts and ensure efficient teamwork to meet farm goals.
   • Foster a safe and productive work environment, adhering to labor and safety regulations.
4. Business and Administrative Duties:
   • Develop and manage budgets, track expenses, and optimize farm profitability.
   • Maintain accurate records of herd health, breeding, production and sales.
   • Market and sell farm products and negotiate with buyers.
5. Pasture and Resource Management:
   • Implement rotational grazing systems to maintain pasture quality and prevent overgrazing.
   • Monitor and manage water resources, soil health, and sustainable farming practices.
   • Source and manage supplies, such as feed, veterinary products, and equipment.
   • Best zero or semi grazing approaches.
6. Problem Solving and Innovation:
   • Diagnose and address herd health issues, consulting with veterinarians as needed.
   • Identify opportunities to improve farm efficiency, such as adopting new technologies or sustainable practices.
   • Stay updated on industry trends, market demands, and advancements in goat farming.

Qualifications and Skills

• Education: Degree in animal science with 3 years experience in goat farming or a Diploma in animal Science with 6 Years Experience.
• Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of goat husbandry, including breeding, nutrition, and health management.
  • Leadership and team management skills to supervise farm staff.
  • Basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Financial acumen for budgeting and farm management.
  • Problem-solving skills to address health, operational, or environmental challenges.
  • Physical stamina for hands-on work in various weather conditions.
  • Candidates with experience in specific goat breeds (e.g., Boer for meat, Saanen for dairy, or Angora for fiber) may be preferred, depending on the farm’s focus.
