The Opportunity

Save the Children (SC) is seeking a Technical Specialist for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) for the Climate-Resilient Health and Wellbeing for Rural Communities in Southern Malawi Project, funded by the Green Climate Fund. The project will be co-executed by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Save the Children in Malawi over a five-year period. Its goal is to reduce the risk of climate-related diseases, enhance the climate resilience of healthcare infrastructure, and build the capacity of healthcare staff and communities to respond to the health impacts of climate change. This project serves as a foundational health systems strengthening initiative for the MoH to address its climate and health objectives outlined in the Health Sector Strategy III

 

The Technical Specialist for GESI will lead the technical strategy and implementation of GESI functions for the Green Climate Fund project, reporting to the Technical Advisor Lead. This role ensures the integration of GESI across the project, provides guidance on safeguarding, and minimizes risks of violence, exploitation, abuse, and harassment. The incumbent will work closely with six local councils, supporting project staff to achieve GESI objectives, and lead the strategic direction for GESI activities. They will also oversee gender and social inclusion analysis and strategy throughout the project

 

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

 

To be successful, you will bring/have: 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

  • A bachelor’s degree in gender studies, development studies, sociology, political science, anthropology, or a related field. A post-graduate degree in a relevant field is highly desirable.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in gender equality and social inclusion programs, including conducting GESI analysis, and developing, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on GESI strategies.
  • Proven experience in using participatory research methods is highly preferred.
  •   Demonstrated experience in managing child safeguarding risks, implementing safeguard policies, conducting risk assessments, and designing mitigation strategies, particularly in preventing sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment, and ensuring child protection.
  •  Strong skills in qualitative research while adhering to ethical standards for safeguarding at-risk respondents.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with experience in building and leading teams, and delivering high-quality outputs within deadlines.
  •  Established networks and experience working with local groups, constituency-led CSOs, and diverse organizations of vulnerable people across Malawi.
  •  Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including training, mentoring, and building capacity on GESI and safeguarding topics.
  •   Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chichewa.
  • Ability to support ongoing activities in line with targets outlined in the GCF work plan.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with experience in preparing high-level communication products for stakeholders, clients, and officials.
  •  Proven ability to engage effectively with a broad range of government, non-government, and donor organizations, with strong cross-cultural communication skills
  • Practical and technical understanding of gender equality and social inclusion, demonstrated through experience implementing gender-sensitive activities in Malawi
