Total LandCare (TLC)

Total LandCare (TLC) is a non-profit organization implementing development programs in Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. TLC’s mission is to transform the livelihoods of rural households from subsistence to prosperity and self-reliance. Achieving this goal involves building the capacity of organized groups of farmers, cooperatives, and related local governance structures to integrate sustainable agricultural and natural resource practices with initiatives to strengthen livelihoods and value chains linked to micro-finance and markets. The ultimate aim is to increase farm productivity, diversification, profitability and resilience with lower input costs and sound management of the landscape for current and future generations.

To support the above mission, TLC has secured funding towards the implementation of development projects in Northern and Central Malawi. The goal of the projects are a) to strengthen local food systems in selected extension planning areas (EPAs) through improved food and nutrition security, increased resilience to climate change and increased income among agriculture-dependent rural households, and b) to restore the land and livelihoods of vulnerable small-scale farm households, and to enhance carbon sinks using locally-appropriate evergreening systems.

TLC is therefore seeking the services of qualified, highly motivated, and hardworking persons to fill the following position:

Field Coordinator – Landscape Restoration (agroforestry, natural regeneration/FMNR, natural resource-based value chains) X3

Responsibilities:

  • Sensitize communities/farmers/Village Development Committees/ on all project activities.
  • Facilitate formation of clusters with the involvement of community leaders, government, implementing partners, other NGOs and private sector collaborators based on agreed criteria.
  • Identify villages/producer groups and individual households for participation in different activities, strengthen existing and/or form new local governance structures, and help guide the development of community-based action plans.
  • Train local governance structures in corporate governance practices, basic rights, conflict resolution and by-law formulation related to natural resource management.
  • Advocate for and support villages to engage government in the co-management of natural resources.
  • Provide formal and informal trainings using the Farmer Field School and other related extension methodologies to Community Extension Workers producer groups, and farmers in a) farmer-managed natural regeneration; b) establishment and management of farm-based fertilizer trees and shrubs; and c) ecosystem-based value chains.
  • Facilitate the establishment and management of model farms/villages based on project interventions.
  • Support communities to implement EverGreening practices such as farmer-managed natural regeneration, fertilizer trees and shrubs and targeted tree planting using the integrated watershed management approach.
  • Support organized groups of farmers to access markets and financial services for ecosystem-based value chains and provide training in collective marketing, financial literacy, etc.
  • Distribute field supplies/equipment, seed, and other inputs to farmers as necessary ensuring that agreed systems/tools for distribution and monitoring receipt by beneficiaries are being adhered to all the time.
  • Participate in meetings, cross-farm visits, and open field days with implementing partners, government, other NGO extension staff and village committees to explain/discuss and promote TLC initiatives.
  • Collect and organize M&E data using standard templates related to household listing, farmer trainings, intervention specific operations and management, field results, beneficiary listing according to practice, input and equipment distribution and other activities for input into impact surveys, semi-annual and annual reports.
  • Produce quarterly workplans and reports for performance-based appraisals.
  • Provide updates on TLC related activities at EPAs, VDCs and ADCs as needed as well as represent the Project Manager at district council meetings as delegated. The FC will cooperate fully with the implementing partner organizations, AEDIC, AEDOs and other stakeholders to ensure harmonization of messages and approaches.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Diploma in Forestry/community-based natural resource management, landscape restoration or related fields.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in natural resource management.
  • Familiar with the NRM related Acts and Policies.
  • Familiar with NRM-related local governance structures.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the community based NRM guidelines.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
