Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Farm Manager for the National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi (NASFAM).

The position is based at Kawerawera Farm in Mchinji and reports to the Head of Farm Services. The position is responsible for the development and management of the farming business and ensuring profitability of the farm operations.The incumbent will in conjunction with the Head of Farm Services determine the crops to be grown at the farm based on marketing requirements, set planting and harvesting schedules, manage crops and other farm enterprises and manage marketing of the produce grown at the farm.

The Farm Manager will supervise day-to-day farm operations including development of work plans
and writing reports, ensuring efficient utilization of resources both labour and finances and maintenance of farm buildings and machinery.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

1. In Conjunction with the Head of Farm Services, develop annual farm plans to ensure that the farm
operates at full scale and profitably.
2. Develop and implement annual farming schedules and budgets while monitoring and controlling
expenses to stay within budgetary limits and optimize productivity profitability
3. Plan and coordinate the implementation of all farm activities including planting, harvesting,
grading, storage and marketing;
4. Supervise and manage the performance of all members of staff at the farm ensuring that daily
assigned tasks are completed in accordance with plans and schedules
5. Manage inventory levels of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other farm inputs and ensure
efficient utilization of the same for increased crop yields;
6. Implement sustainable farming practices to conserve resources, maximise production of crops
grown at the farm and minimize environmental impact;
7. Mount demonstrations on practices and technologies promoted by NASFAM for the transfer of technologies to recruited in and out-growers and facilitate produce marketing for in and out-growers.

8. Represent the farm in community events, agricultural fairs, or industry associations.

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or related field from a recognised University.
  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in farm business management

1. Vast experience in farm business management
2. Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on hard repetitive
physical work.
3. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to plan, prioritize, and delegate tasks
effectively.
4. Financial management skills, including budgeting and cost control.
5. Adaptable and flexibility to handle changing priorities and unforeseen challenges.
6. Communication skills to interact with farm workers, suppliers, farmers (in-growers and out-
growers) communities and other stakeholders.
7. Must have experience working with smallholder farmers
8. Willingness to live on the farm for convenient management.
9. Commitment to sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship and an understanding of agricultural technology, machinery, and basic farm equipment.
10. Aged between 35 to 55 years.
11. Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
