Chemonics International Inc, a U.S. based international development consulting firm, seeks the following long-term positions for the USAID Next Generation Early Grade Reading Activity (NextGen) in Malawi. The $75 million activity aims to solidify and build on the contributions made to date as part of the implementation of Malawi’s National Reading Program (NRP) towards improving the delivery of high-quality early primary reading instruction in all Malawian primary schools. We are seeking individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Positions

Chemonics International Inc, a U.S. based international development consulting firm, seeks a Family and Community Education Specialist for the USAID Next Generation Early Grade Reading Activity (NextGen) in Malawi. The $75 million activity aims to solidify and build on the contributions made to date as part of the implementation of Malawi’s National Reading Program (NRP) towards improving the delivery of high-quality early primary reading instruction in all Malawian primary schools. We are seeking individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of Malawi’s lower primary students.

This is a long-term position that will be based in Zomba, Malawi.

Responsibilities include:

•    Builds the capacity of community members, village chiefs, and community leaders to mobilize resources for community literacy activities, schools, and teachers to increase opportunities for reading to/with children outside of school

•    Engages parents/caregivers/families of children with and without disabilities to increase support for literacy and learning at home, especially oral language development in Chichewa and English

•    Contributes to social and behavior change communication and other messaging methods that increase awareness of the connections between reading success, school achievement, and future income generation

Qualifications:

•    Bachelor’s degree in education or relevant area.

•    Minimum two years’ experience implementing/supporting the National Reading Program

•    Expertise implementing activities that support gender equality and inclusion in education programming and at community level

•    Experience in the tasks

•    Minimum two years’ experience implementing/supporting the National Reading Program

•    Expertise implementing activities that support gender equality and inclusion in education programming and at community level

•    Experience engaging parents/caregivers/families of children with and without disabilities to increase support for literacy and learning at home, especially oral language development in Chichewa and English

•    Experience designing and implementing activities that engage/empower non-reading parents/caregivers to support their child’s education, especially reading

• Experience with a USAID-funded project preferred

•    Written and spoken proficiency in English and Chichewa required.
