The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) is an apex business
association with membership from all sectors of the Malawi economy. The Confederation’s mission
is to serve the needs of its members through representation and provision of high value services
and its vision is, ‘to be an institution that creates and delivers value to our members throughout
the country as we respond to their existing and emerging needs’.
The Confederation would like to invite applications from suitably qualified and competitive
candidates to fill a vacant position of DIRECTOR, BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT that has arisen within
its establishment.
Job Purpose
The Director, Business Environment leads a team of professional economists responsible for
analyzing and interpreting economic data in order to provide insights and recommendations to
businesses, governments, and organizations. They use their expertise to identify trends, forecast
future economic conditions, and make recommendations based on their analysis. They develop
research evidence-based proposals to inform advocacy on policy and regulatory framework while
enhancing the members’ ability to take up the opportunities presented by the environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
1) Identify, monitor, track and analyse policies and regulations that pose obstacles to doing
business, and their trends, to inform advocacy direction for the benefit of the Confederation’s
members and the general public.
2) Assess and communicate potential policy and regulatory threats and opportunities to the
Confederation’s members and develop appropriate policy positions for public policy advocacy
with government and enhancement strategies for the Confederations’ members to capitalize
on the potential opportunities.
3) Create content for the Confederation’s communication outreach through op-eds, talking
points, action alerts, newsletters, bulletins, and for the website e.t.c. and manage the process
for review.
4) Represent the Confederation in meetings with policymakers, policy influencers and other
stakeholders and advocate for the interests of the Confederation’s members.
5) Articulate and communicate the positions of the Confederation on key policy issues in briefing
papers, public presentations to a wide range of audiences including policy-makers, members,
other stakeholders and the media.
6) Build coalitions and partnerships that will help the Confederation to expand its reach and
effectiveness in advancing key public policy issues and/or changes to government.
7) Proactively build relationships with key policymakers, decision-makers and executives
in government agencies and other relevant organizations with a view to helping prioritize
government public policy issues faced by the Confederation’s members.
8) Develop and execute strategies for engaging with policymakers around issues that affect the
Confederation’s members.
9) Formulate project proposals, implement and monitor various projects of the Confederation.
10) Lead strategy development on Advocacy and partnership with relevant stakeholders.
11) Advise internal management and teams on public policy matters to help guide development
and delivery of services and internal policies.
Qualifications, Skills and Competences
a) Advanced University Degree (Masters or higher) in Economics, Public Policy Management, or
any related field, with at least 10 years management level experience.
b) Professional experience in policy advocacy, policy research and analysis, and coalition building
at senior management level.
c) Experience in mentoring, training and/or engagement on policy advocacy and/or campaigns.
d) Demonstrated skills in proactively building relationships with diverse audiences, including
public officials, coalition partners and members of the media.
e) Excellent writing, speaking and analytical skills.
f) Strong self-motivation, ability to meet tight deadlines and balance multiple priorities.
g) Ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals from different backgrounds.
h) Demonstrated commitment to the values of the Confederation; and competence in the use of
Microsoft Office suite, statistical tools and econometric tools.
i) An advanced understanding of Private Sector operations.
