The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences invites applications from suitably qualified, The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a new University formed by merging the College of Medicine and Kamuzu College of Nursing and established by an Act of Parliament (No. 20 of 2019). KUHeS is a Health and Allied Sciences University that has been established to educate and graduate excellent health professionals that are globally competent but locally relevant.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified, competent, dynamic and visionary individuals to fill the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) will work with the Vice Chancellor (VC) in providing leadership within the University in order to realize its vision of becoming a world class University with centres of excellence in health education, research and innovation. Apart from providing strategic leadership in the management of academic services, the DVC will deputize the Vice Chancellor in all aspects of University leadership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Provide innovative leadership geared at the furtherance of the objectives of the University;
  • Initiate and ensure the development, monitoring and reviewing of policies, strategies, programmes and plans;
  • Ensure efficient, effective and economic utilization of resources;
  • Enforcing compliance to statutory and other regulatory requirements;
  • Set and monitor the implementation of institutional standards so that the quality of the graduates is consistent with local, regional and international expectations;
  • Chair relevant University Committees as provided by legislation or as assigned by Council;
  • Provide regular reports and updates to the VC on assigned areas of responsibility and any pertinent matters affecting the University
  • Supervise and mentor members of staff that report and are accountable to his/her office.

Academic Affairs Management

  • Developing and fostering implementation of academic programmes, plans, policies and strategies of the University;
  • Fostering the development and regular reviews of academic programmes;
  • Setting and monitoring the implementation of academic standards;
  • Ensuring that schools and departmental plans are aligned with the delivery of institutional goals; Providing academic leadership that promotes a culture of excellence and enterprise;
  • Advancing academic recruitment, development and promotion processes that fosters academic excellence;
  • Developing industrial linkages to ensure relevance of University programmes to the industry;
  • Fostering intellectual interaction across the University;

Resource Mobilization, Entrepreneurship and Innovation

  • Establishing and managing partnership with government, the public and private sectors, development partners and international community;
  • Generate financial and other resources to sustain and improve operations of the University;
  • Supporting the development and implementation of the University’s business and marketing strategies;
  • Exploring and facilitating alternative teaching and learning avenues to widen access to quality higher education;

Networking

  • Communicating institutional strategy and priorities to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Developing and maintaining partnership with Government, the public and private sectors, development partners and international organisations. To be considered for the position of Executive Dean, you must demonstrate the following selection criteria in a curriculum vitae and supporting documents providing examples of relevant experience and achievements:
  • Visionary leadership that unites and inspires people, and creates a culture of high performance and collegiality
  • Five-years-experience in the senior management of resources and people to deliver outcomes against a background of change and development
  • Strategic thinking, business development and implementation – both at a high level and through the work of others
  • Skills in both internal and external communications within a complex environment
  • Ability to mentor, coach and manage staff for success
  • Demonstrated understanding of the local and global higher education context
  • Outstanding skills for building relationships and partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Commitment to a contemporary approach to university education in STEM disciplines and pedagogic innovations

REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of PhD or equivalent qualification from an institution accredited or recognised under the National Council of Higher Education Act;
  • At least 10 years’ experience in a senior management position in an academic institution;
  • Demonstrable leadership and management skills.
  • Distinguished scholar with outstanding academic and administrative records

  • Decision making: a good balance between consultative and decisiveness,
  • Entrepreneurial: experience of developing business models, achieving a good balance between risks and success
  • Lead change: capable of leading and overseeing the development of structures, systems, processes and procedures of the university
  • Impactful: astuteness, able to get buy-in from the University community and other stakeholders; balances stakeholders priorities with a focus on delivering results
  • Adaptability: able to balance the short-term and long term perspectives; identifies early signals and adapts proactively.
  • Reliability: consistently delivering and following through on agreed commitments;
  • Effective communication: clearly communicates, balances soft skills and decisiveness; effective ambassador of the University

TENURE OF THE POST: The post of DVC is open to qualified Malawian candidates only. It is offered on a contract basis for 5 years in the first instance and may be renewed based on performance and success in a competitive interview process

REMUNERATION: the post comes with a highly competitive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the University’s existing structure of benefits
