Job Description

Introduction

The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Clinical Research Programme (MLW) (http://www.mlw.mw) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, affiliated to the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). MLW has 2 aims, to conduct excellent research to benefit health and train the next generation of researcher. Our Blantyre based offices located within the vicinity of the largest hospital in Malawi, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) provide for the optimum research environment.

It was established in 1995 and became a Wellcome Africa and Asia Program (AAP) in 2003. MLW has established itself as an internationally recognised centre for research excellence and research training. The current structure supports 16 locally led research groups each of which have translational targets and a pipeline of trainees to develop their strategy, grant funding and clinical impact.  Research is described best in 6 Themes – Infection Biology; Vaccines; Maternal Neonatal and Child Health; Social Science; Clinical and Experimental Medicine; Population Health.

The Data Management Support Unit (DMSU) was developed in response to a growing need for expert study and excellent data management services. The department has two (2) main section, Data Management Services and Translation and Transcribing (T&T) and working with about 25+ members of staff. The Data Management Support Unit Lead is a key position at the heart of MLW’s aim to carry out research to impact health and train the next generation of researchers.

B          POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE):

To provide leadership support to the department and managing the design, development and implementation and support of clinical research information systems to ensure high-quality research data collection, audit, storage, and analysis across a diverse portfolio of >100 clinical and community-based research studies encompassing a wide range of data types. Requires an emphasis on data quality, integrity, security, and reproducibility.

 

Responsibilities

C    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and strategic direction-setting of a large, modern clinical research-focused data department

Mentor, develop and train data management team

Management and supportive oversight of a team of 20+ data managers, database administrators, and data officers with the help of Lead Data Managers.

Ensure conformance and adherence to globally accepted data management standards

Ensure conformance to local and international legislation on management of clinical research data, focusing on participant privacy and confidentiality

Overall management of investigator-lead and pharmaceutical interventional, observational, and lab-based research projects

Compilation of monthly departmental reports

Attend Heads of Department (HoDs), Research Strategy Group (RSG), Security, Data        Management Steering committee meetings and others.

Report weekly on strategic issues to Chief operations officer (COO)

Management and monitoring of departmental budgets

Manage performance of direct subordinates.

Compile recharges to study project using standard data costing model

Provide leadership support to Translation and Transcription Section of the department

 

 

Requirements

D          QUALIFICATIONS: (i.e., Education, Training and Experience Requirements).

(a)       Education: The minimum level of education required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.

  • Master’s degree in computer sciences or its equivalent

(b)       Experience:  The minimum number of years of experience required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.

  • At least 10 years’ experience at a senior management/leadership spent within data management sections.
  • Proven experience of working within internationally focused organizations with proven ability to lead and manage complex projects with multinational and multi-cultural stakeholders.
