The $75 million activity aims to solidify and build on the contributions made to date as part of the implementation of Malawi’s National Reading Program (NRP) towards improving the delivery of high-quality early primary reading instruction in all Malawian primary schools. Positions

Chemonics International Inc, a U.S. based international development consulting firm, seeks a pre-primary Curriculum, Transition and Materials Developer for the USAID Next Generation Early Grade Reading Activity (NextGen) in Malawi. The $75 million activity aims to solidify and build on the contributions made to date as part of the implementation of Malawi’s National Reading Program (NRP) towards improving the delivery of high-quality early primary reading instruction in all Malawian primary schools. We are seeking individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of Malawi’s lower primary students.

This is a long-term position that will be based in Zomba, Malawi.

Responsibilities include:

•    Support creation of standards for a model of delivering pre-primary education that supports a smooth transition from pre-primary to Grade 1.

•    Ensures that NextGen-supported pre-primary teaching and learning materials are gender-sensitive, inclusive, engaging, and relevant to the Malawian context and build skills needed for successful transition.

•    Supports pilot of the NextGen model of pre-primary education, and appropriate data collection at the direction of the Senior Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Specialist.

•    Coordinates with the Ministry of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Education to ensure curricular issues and teaching and learning materials are appropriately aligned with relevant policies of both ministries.

Qualifications:

•    Bachelor’s degree in Education, preferably in curriculum development; Advanced Degree preferred. An academic specialty or extensive field experience in early grade reading – a combination of both is preferred.

•    At least 5 years’ experience in the technical direction of programs that work specifically to improve early grade reading.

•    Prior experience with the development of early grade reading materials, training programs, classroom monitoring protocols, and tests and assessments (including EGRA or similar tests).

•    Familiarity with, and comprehension of, core concepts in early grade reading education.

•    Proven experience building relationships and facilitating learning about how to improve project work preferred.

•    Experience with a USAID-funded project preferred

•    Written and spoken proficiency in English and Chichewa.
