It focuses on providing school infrastructure to support government education strategies in countries ranked low on the Human Development Index. Let’s Build is without religious and political affiliation. In Malawi, Let’s Build was registered in 2021 as a company limited by guarantee and as an NGO with CONGOMA and NGO Board.

The Construction Officer will provide on-going inspection of construction works and supervision for the construction of Community Day Secondary Schools. The officer should have technical knowledge and skills of construction and experience engaging with communities in rural areas of Malawi.

Role Dimensions:

  • Providing day to day inspection and supervision of construction of secondary schools.
  • Support community engagement in construction activities
  • Monitoring compliance of Let’s Build and government policies by contractors
  • Monitor defects and oversee their repairs during the defect liability period

Key Areas Of Accountability

  • Conduct periodic inspection and supervision of construction projects whilst ensuring that construction works are in line with international and national quality standards, align with the plans and specifications as per contract terms and are completed in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the compilation of requisite reports as per agreed schedules.
  • Carry out routine and scheduled visits to the construction sites and monitor the quality of the work produced by contractors and community construction.
  • Ensure that the quality and quantity of construction materials used is as per set standards and as prescribed in the plans, detailed specifications, and BoQs.
  • Conduct routine on site material testing whenever necessary
  • Collect qualitative and numerical data from sites regarding the construction works and provide the data in a timely manner to all concerned.
  • Provide management and oversight to School Management Committees (SMC).
  • Cultivate strategic relationships with district partners and community leaders to ensure that all community related issues are handled professionally.
  • Participate in meetings with district partners, contractors, community leaders wherever necessary.
  • Monitor defects during the defect liability period.
  • Oversee and ensure repairs of defects during the defect’s liability period.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out without putting children at risk of abuse, harm or exploitation.
  • Comply with relevant Let’s Build policies and procedures.
  • Ensure contractor is compliance with all Let’s Build and Government policies.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in construction-related fields and/or commensurate certificates.

Essential

  • At least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the construction industry.
  • Proven experience in overseeing the construction of schools or similar construction projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising contractors and inspecting construction works.
  • Experience in working with communities in rural areas.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including community, government and international consultants.
  • Willingness to travel to field and work in difficult environment on a regular basis

Desirable

  • Experience in working with donor funded projects.
  • Proven experience in managing community led construction works.
  • Experience in working with construction works using Cement Blocks.
  • Ability to collaborate in a small, proactive team, motivating colleagues and providing support and advice as necessary
  • Willingness and ability to change work practices and hours
  • Understanding of Let’s Build Vision and Mission and a commitment to its objectives
  • Good personal organisational skills, including time management, and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Commitment to and understanding of Let’s Build ’s aims, core values and principles
  • Ability to work within a multicultural setting
  • Current drivers license
  • Current motorbike drivers license and experience driving motorbike
