Global Aids Interfaith Alliance (GAIA)

GAIA Malawi is a Non – Governmental Organization that provides primary health care services targeting prevention, care and support in communities affected by high disease burden. GAIA works in partnership with the District Health Offices of the Ministry of Health through GAIA Mobile Health Clinic program to increase access to health services in high need and under – served rural areas. GAIA also provides support for PLHIV, education for orphans and under-privileged children at primary and secondary level, and it promotes retention of staff in the public health sector workforce through provision of the GAIA Nursing Scholarship in coordination with the Ministry of Health.

Thanzi Project was rolled to improve health outcomes for pregnant women and infants and prevent new HIV infections for women, girls and other high – risk populations in the Monkey – Bay zone, Mangochi District. The Thanzi Project is a third Mobile Clinic in the district, expanding comprehensive primary health care, including combination HIV prevention, sexual reproductive health services, health promotion/ education, and targeted outreach services. Incorporating GAIA’s sustainability – building approach of working in partnership with the district health offices. The project builds capacity and strengthens district partners towards a robust, coordinated system of care for rural residents of Mangochi.

GAIA seeks to recruit a highly motivated and suitably qualified individual to support the implementation of the Thanzi project in Mangochi as Community Outreach Nurse.

Job Summary

Major duties and responsibilities

·         Work with the clinic team and other community groups to identify women at risks and provide services to improve health outcomes.

·         Conduct outreach care to at-risk clients needing home or community – based follow – up, including new mothers, infants and HIV + clients.

·         Work with the clinic teams to strengthen quality antenatal and post-natal care in catchment areas of Monkey-Bay zone, including:

v  Strengthen early infant diagnosis and identify children that are lost in care.

v  Work with the Monkey-Bay zone team to ensure maternal and neonatal death audits are conducted.

·         Supervise and coordinate all HIV testing activities, including:

v  Ensure that all newly diagnosed HIV positive clients are followed and linked to treatment care and support within 2 weeks of positive result.

v  Support community health workers (CHWs) in conducting HIV risk assessment at clinic sites.

v  Lead in ascertainment of HIV status for partners/ spouses and biological children through index testing.

v  Work with clinical partners to strengthen community ART and support Community ART groups to access treatment.

v  Conduct mapping of HIV hotspots and recommend to the Team Lead on appropriate services such as SBC and targeted men’s testing.

·         Support the clinics with health education focusing on HIV and AIDS, Covid 19, Family planning, Cervical cancer, Cholera and other emergency priority health problems.

·         Work with clinic team members to maintain the supply chain of drugs and supplies to ensure the clinic has all supplies.

·         Participate in monthly, quarterly and annual meetings with other Community Health Workers to share progress, successes and challenges.

·         Strengthen collaboration with other stakeholders at community level.

·         Work with HSAs in the communities to ensure that children are fully immunized by the age of 12 months.

·         Perform any other duties as allocated by the Supervisor.

Skills and Qualifications

·         Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery with experience working in community: those with BSc in community health have added advantage.

·         Ability to collaborate with District Health Office staff.

·         Ability to analyze situation and propose interventions.

·         Ability to write reports.

·         Ability to communicate both in English and Chichewa.

·         Ability to work in a team.

·         Community engagement skills.

·         Ability to ride a motorcycle.
